Neutralizing Student Arguing
We had great conversations with the Daily Stand-Up! We will focus on our goal for improving class and school culture everyday through a Daily Stand-Up. These stand-ups are highly recommended (not required), quick, goal-oriented, and most important team centered. (No Diversions)
What worked today with my technique? What didn’t work? What will I do differently tomorrow?
Goal 1: Neutralize Student Arguing with teacher
This goal can be met by using a couple of techniques; empathy and a one-liner that prompts the student to reflect/think and own the problem.
Build a relationship with a student by stating…. “I noticed that ___________.”
Offer corrective action with a personal redirection…. “I argue at 6 pm daily.” “I speak with students who show respect.” “I help students who follow procedure.” “I care too much to allow you to be distracted by your phone. Can you put that away?”
-Make sure there is no fear of retaliation during the interaction.
-Make sure there is no sarcasm in your voice.
-Make sure that you are genuine with your one-liner and that you step away to allow the student to think.
Remember that it is key for you to offer what you are asking for; “I speak with students who show respect.” Means that respect must be extended with empathy and perspective.
