"Achieving Our Dreams through Education"
SOCIAL MEDIA
The quote, "An ounce of prevention is worth more than a pound of cure," rings true in regards to social media so take these articles as prevention. These 12 stories can be looked at as warning signs to keep on the right path, and if you enjoy working in the education profession (whether your a member of the classified or certified staff) then you need to be aware of this stuff. I hope it doesn't seem negative or wreak of paranoia. :) But I would rather have you all be safe instead of sorry. Next week I will share some resources on how educators can utilize the cyberspace.
If you are employed by Crow School parents need to know that you are a safe person for their children to be around. Do not associate our school name with curse words, alcohol/drug abuse, violence and other distasteful things.
You may think the best way to deal with SM is that we all bury our heads in the sand like ostriches, but SM is not going away. But if someone cannot think before they click, well then that person may want to avoid the digital landscape at all costs.
This quote from the NEA dispels a powerful myth I see with some people I have visited with around the state about this, "First, let’s debunk the free speech myth: Many teachers believe they have the absolute First Amendment right to post anything they want on social networking sites, including party pix and diatribes about the boss. After all, they’re on their own time and using their own resources." (Yes it is a myth. If you want to read more find the article involving the pirate hat.)
Please refer to our the social media policy and employee handbook to learn what you should and shouldn't do as a school employee and use these articles below to give you guidance.

What Teachers Said this Week
5. “When I reached out to my network for my teacher preparation Teachers Teaming Up project, I thought I would have to beg people to contribute. In fact, every single teacher I asked for help stepped up.” Teacher, Michigan
4. “When [this teacher] reached out to talk digital tools to support novice teachers, I thought, ‘what a brilliant idea.’ I’m of the last generation. I don’t think about using social media in the way she does.” Professor of Teacher Preparation on collaborating with a current practitioner, Michigan
3. “Tools that are meant to support teachers are so rarely written by teachers. I want to say to everyone, ‘It’s not that hard to consult with teachers. If you are working on something that’s for teachers, I can find you teachers who can advise you.’” Teacher, Illinois
2. “We need for teachers to see advocacy as just part of our profession – whether it’s talking about small ‘p’ policy with parents at the soccer game or big ‘P’ policy at the conference table.” Teacher, Utah
1. "No educator doesn't care about the next generation of teachers." Teacher, Michigan
