What are restorative practices?
By definition, Restorative Practices is a differentiated approach to building and sustaining relationships in order to better manage student and adult behavior. There are two focal points we will be focusing on as we begin this relational/restorative journey. The first focus is a proactive-shift towards building greater, genuine relationships in the classroom; teacher-to-student, student-to-teacher, and student-to-student. The second focus allows us to shift our mindset from attempting to fix students who break rules, to a more restorative process that provides opportunities to respond in ways that repair relationships which have been impacted due to an individual’s misbehaviors or actions. This shift in mindset allows for individuals who have impacted one another to be brought together in a safe space (aka Circle) to acknowledge; how they have been impacted, take accountability & responsibility for their actions, identify what needs to happen to make things right, and establish a plan for making things right.
