Mrs. Dykstra's Class

Field Trip

We will be headed out to Cranbrook Institute of Science on Wednesday, January 6th. We will be leaving at 8:30am and returning around 2:30pm just in time for specials. Because we will not be at school for lunch, please send your child with a brown bag lunch with all things that can be thrown away.

The following parents are coming with us, please come into school with your child in the morning: Mrs. and Mr. Cierpial, Mrs. Garceau, Mrs. Hexter, Mrs. Justin, Mrs. Perkins, Mr. Nyenhuis, Mr. O'Mara, Mrs. Wyse.

ALL children, unless they are already 8, MUST ride in a booster seat. This is Michigan State law. If you are not driving, please send your child's seat in to school with them in the morning. We will make sure they are labeled.

Flattening Our Classroom---taking our learning outside our classroom

No School

Just a reminder that there is no school on Monday, January 18th because of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. day. There is also no school on Friday, January 29th because of teacher professional development.

We finished up our persuassive writing unit just before break! Our publishing party took us to the local mailbox where we got to mail our letters (see picture below). This month we are beginning our personal narrative units of study. We are focusing on narrowing our ideas down, including appropriate details, and beginning to focus on word choice and voice.

In December our Growing Readers' Club completed the comprehension strategies (wondering, connecting, visualizing, inferring, and main idea). We are about to dive into a large non-fiction unit that will culminate with non-fiction book clubs near the end of the month.

Our money and time unit will be finishing up this week. We will spend the remainder of January working on addition and subtraction with regrouping. Once we learn them in class, I will be sending home links to videos that you can watch with your child to help reinforce the concepts
