Family Engagement Tips:
To succeed academically, your child will need to be able to plan his time wisely. To help him begin building this skill, teach him to be a clock-watcher and calendar-counter. For example, ask him to watch the clock to make sure your family is ready on time for school, work or other activities. And have him use a calendar to count off the days until his birthday, spring break or a special family outing. http://niswc.com/17cAC326428
Make the most of mealtime conversation
One positive outcome of having to spend more time at home is that families can eat more meals together. Experts say that family meals are an important way for parents to keep communication flowing with children and support school success. Keep the conversation going by having your child help clean up, too. And if your family can't eat dinner together, spend extra time over breakfast! http://niswc.com/17cBC326428
To encourage reading, try tips from the kids
When the Reading is Fundamental program asked children what encouraged them to read, the kids had great responses. Here are some to try: Let your child pick out books. Set goals and offer small incentives (one mom adds a new circle to a paper "reading caterpillar" for each book her child reads). Send your child notes of praise for finishing a chapter or to say "I love you." And set an example by reading in your own free time. http://niswc.com/17cCC326428
Show your child how to make the time for projects
You've got a big project looming. Your child has a science report due and has yet to start it. The solution to both situations is the same: Don't put things off. Together, make specific plans for doing the work for your projects. Put them on the calendar. Then show your child how to look for "extra" time. You both can brainstorm project ideas while waiting in line, for example. She can read a few pages on a car ride. http://niswc.com/17cDC326428
Help your child get ready to concentrate
Kids need to be able to concentrate when doing schoolwork. Here are some techniques that can help: When your child is about to tackle an assignment, have him think about what he's going to do. A mental picture can make concentrating easier. You can also let him choose a small incentive he'll earn when the work is complete, such as playing a game with you. It may help him persist through a tough task. http://niswc.com/17cEC326428
Catching words makes reading fun!
Kids who enjoy reading do more of it. Make reading fun for your young reader with a "fishing" game: Get some index cards. Write one vocabulary word on each, then attach a paper clip to each card. These are the fish. To make a rod, tie a magnet to one end of a piece of string, and tie the other end to a small stick. Now, let your child "fish" for words. Give her a point for every word she can read (or define, if she's older). http://niswc.com/17cFC326428
Explain the reasons behind the rules
When you are short on time or temper and just want your child to do as you ask, it can be easy to rely on trite phrases like "It's for your own good," or "Because I said so." But in order to learn to make better choices, your child needs to hear your real reasons for making a decision. "You can't stay up until 11:00 to watch the end of the movie. You need your sleep to do a good job in school tomorrow." http://niswc.com/17cGC326428
