Newsletter - Week 5, Term 2

Greenmeadows School 3rd June 2022

Tēnā koutou kātoa,

Tālofa lava - the school has recognised Samoan language week over the course of the past week.

Today marks the halfway point of Term 2 ... where does the time go?!?!?

The Queen's Birthday holiday on Monday is quite timely with the various illnesses around - colds, coughs, a nasty tummy bug that a number of children have been affected by ... as well as a small number with COVID. A number of students have been unwell so hopefully an additional day of rest will help all concerned.

Our COVID numbers have been less than ten at any one time since the beginning of this term (we currently have five students at home with COVID). I am aware that other regions of New Zealand are starting to see reinfections of those who have previously had taken sick during Term 1. We are looking at this situation carefully. If numbers of cases at school start to rise, we may have to take safety measures such as reintroducing mask wearing for older students. We will keep you in the loop and communicate any changes if that was to occur.

All the best to our GMS families in enjoying a safe long weekend.

Ka kite anō,

Mark Johnson

A very warm welcome to Hudson Smith who started with us this week! Our roll is now at 453 pupils.

We are now at the stage of planning for the 2023 year. It is really important that we have as clear an indication of new enrolment numbers as possible.

If you have a child who is going to turn five at any stage from now till the end 2023 and they are going to attend GMS, please let us know as soon as possible.

This also applies to any relatives, neighbours or friends you may have who are in our zone and wish for their children to come to our wonderful school. Even if you think we may already know, there is no harm in telling us (again).

Many thanks for your help.

You can either phone the school or email Sara at

Mrs Leah Haronga is going to start maternity leave from the end of Term 2. To cover for her absence, the school will be employing Mrs Amy Tonks for the period of Leah's leave. Amy is an experienced teacher having taught in Timaru as well as in schools in Hawkes Bay. She is actually a former student of Greenmeadows School, so knows all about the GMS whānau!

We look forward to having her at school.

We are just about to start a competition to collect the most bottle tops and caps. Milk bottle lids, wine bottle tops, any metal bottle caps (that includes beer) can be collected from now on to raise valuable funds for our new playground. Keep them at home for the moment until the competition officially begins in term 3, we will have more details to share with you soon.

MATARIKI EVENING - Wednesday 22nd June 2022 5.00pm to 7.00pm

Our school will celebrate Matariki with a function here at school that all are invited to.

There will be food and drink on sale. Things on sale include sausages and vegetable soup, as well as marshmallows for toasting!

So plan to wrap up warmly, bring a torch along and come to be part of this activity.

The PTA are looking for helpers to cook the food and run the stalls - can you help?

Please let the office know if you can spare half an hour in any of these time slots 5-5.30, 5.30-6, 6-6.30, 6.30-7.00pm.

We will use cash for our food sales (and not the cash cards we have used the past few functions).

Families can arrive for food from 5.00pm before we start proceedings at 5.30pm under He Kapua. Our kapa haka group will perform to during the night.
