Greetings JES Community!
It's hard to believe November is here! With cooler weather and the holidays right around the corner, we have some fun events coming up for our Cougar families. Check out the RSVP for our Thanksgiving Lunch on Thursday, November 16th including the times for each grade level lunch.
Our Thanksgiving Pies for Teachers was such a great success last year that we will be doing it again this year! Please plan to sign up to bring a teacher a pie from Wednesday, November 15th to Friday, November 17th at 11:00 a.m. We can even pick them up in the parent pick-up or drop-off car line!
As always, we are to help in any way we can. Please do not hesitate to reach out!

5th Grade Science Practice Assessment - Nov. 7th
Fifth grade parents! Please note that your student will be participating in their first state science practice test for the school year on Tuesday, November 7. Please make sure your student is well rested, has a healthy breakfast, and arrives on time to school. The data that is gathered from these practice tests will help guide our teachers in how to best meet the needs of each student.

Fun Fact: Little Free Libraries are often built to remember or honor a loved one.
Gratitude and thanksgiving fill the pages of the books in our Little Free Library throughout the month of November. Whether traveling to America with the characters in a Dear America historical fiction or spending a day with the children of a president in an informational book, you will find stories written in English and Spanish that celebrate the full and varied lives of people living in the United States
We hope you will stop by the Little Free Library and take a book,
leave a book, or trade a book.

Please note that all students can purchase snacks using their lunch accounts. Parents can monitor and modify this privilege by logging in to your School Cafe account by checking PURCHASE HISTORY and PURCHASE RESTRICTIONS.

Texas Bluebonnet Challenge
3rd - 5th graders have the opportunity to participate in the Texas Bluebonnet Challenge.
Students are encouraged to pick at least 5 of the 20 Bluebonnet nominees for the 2023-2024 school year.
Once a student reads 5 of the Bluebonnet books, they will qualify to participate in the statewide vote for their favorite book at the end of January.
Students who read 5 Bluebonnet books by the end of January, will also be invited to a bluebonnet breakfast hosted at the JES library.
Students can find the bluebonnet books online on the Sora app. Here are the directions to log in:
1. Go to soraapp.com
2. Select your school: Jarrell Elementary
3. Use the beginning of your Jarrell ISD school issued gmail minus the @jarrellisd.net part
4. Your password is the same password as your gmail: a six digit number, your capitalized first initial, your lowercase last initial
5. Scroll down until you see the section labeled "New Audiobook additions"

Important Daily Deadlines!
7:30 a.m. The back doors automatically lock, and you will need to drive around and walk your child in to the building. PLEASE DO NOT DROP-OFF STUDENTS AFTER 7:30. They must be signed in by a parent or guardian.
1:30 p.m. ALL transportation changes must be made by 1:30 by emailing or calling Stephanie Garcia at (512)-746-2170 or stephanie.garcia@jarrellisd.org.
2:30 p.m. Any student checking out early for an appointment, must be picked up prior to 2:30.
PRE-K
This week in pre-k we will continue exploring healthy habits, learning that exercise is moving to stay healthy and fit. In math, we are introducing patterns and understanding that patterns are a series of identical cores. In literacy, we will begin learning that rhymes have the same ending sound. Lastly,we will learn that characters can be real or make-believe.
KINDER
1st GRADE
2nd GRADE
In math, we will be comparing numbers, ordering numbers, and using place value strategies to change numbers. In reading skills, we are learning about the /ae/ sound with tricky spellings. We will be reading a new grade level reader and working on building comprehension through the text. We will also be learning about the War of 1812 in knowledge. In science, we should be starting earth materials and natural resources.
3rd GRADE
This week in third grade is going to be a great one! In Reading, we are wrapping up our third unit about body systems and starting a new unit called The Ancient Roman Civilization. We will be focusing on identifying key ideas, central ideas, and key details. In math, we are continuing to work on multiplication and division with the digits 6, 7, and 8! In science, we will be writing an informational paragraph about an animal and how it is classified by scientists.
4th GRADE
In math we are still working in Unit 3, Multiplication and Division, but we will be starting division with remainders and continuing to talk about how place value can support us in solving both multiplication and division. In science we will be going to Unit 4 on Force and Motion. We will be talking about what ways force affects objects and in what ways can we explore how force affects objects. In language arts, we will begin a new fiction unit where we will be reading Treasure Island. We will be focusing on character interactions and changes they go through as we read. Finally in social studies, we will be researching European Explorers of Texas.
5th GRADE
In Language Arts this week, students will continue to study informational text by reading about the Aztec and Inca empires. They will also write informational paragraphs about aspects of these ancient cultures.
In math we will continue working on pictorial decimal division and towards the end of the week will move on to STAAR based word problems on all forms of division.
In science, our students will deepen their understanding of geological processes, exploring the formation of sedimentary rocks and delving into the initial stages of how fossil fuels are created from organic matter over time.
LIBRARY
PreK and Kindergarten will be starting a new nursery rhyme: "Jack and Jill". Students will become familiar with the new rhyme and label parts of the story.
1st & 2nd grade: I can make inferences by using textual evidence to support my thinking so that I can develop an understanding of what is happening in the book "Turk and Runt" by Lisa Wheeler.
3rd-5th grade: I can explain the purpose of nonfiction text features by analyzing the text features found in a sample text so that I can better understand a nonfiction text.
