From our Counselors
Dear parents,
The counselor visited your child’s class this week to talk about an important emotion that we all get from time to time in our lives--anxiety. We defined anxiety as a mix of “scared, worried, and nervous.” Sometimes anxiety can be positive thing! It can drive us and motivate us to great potential. However, sometimes, too much anxiety can paralyze us and hold us back from reaching our potential. We need to know how to recognize anxiety, understand how our thinking can help or hinder anxiety, and know some strategies to defeat anxiety when it hits.
We discussed situations that make us anxious, we discussed our body signs and our thoughts that make us more anxious. We then talked about how we can change our thoughts to help us feel better. Negative and positive self talk is very powerful for anxiety and it’s a great weapon against it!
We also discussed some other strategies, such as deep breathing, thinking of fun things, and counting.
They will be bringing home some drawings of their anxious feelings and how they feel their anxiety in their bodies--have a talk with them and discuss with them where you feel it in your bodies. On the same page are the skills and tools they can use to counteract anxiety. Ask your child how to use them!
