The Weekly Word from CDS FP - January 7-January 11, 2019
Looking Back
Happy New Year and Welcome Back!
I heard lots from the students about their break this past week; it is great to hear that so many were fortunate to travel, spend time with family, and play. We are right back into the swing of things with the start of term three.
Thank you to the parents who joined us for the term 2 assembly. As noted there, January and February are full of special events and happenings at school, beginning with Monday, students will receive their report cards covering the first and second terms of school. Grade 2-4 students have a floor hockey event at CI on Saturday, the 19th.
The whole of FP field trip to the Museum of Modern History will take place on January 24. Details are below, and will also be shared with parents in a separate communication.
Term 3 sparks the beginning of drama classes for Kindergarten. Grade 2 also continues with its second term of drama.
A new After School Program has begun since Monday; it is a class for students who are new to learning the Korean language and students have been selected to attend it. Anyone interested in attending has to have the approval of Ms. Kim, the FP Korean teacher, i.e. the student must be at the appropriate level.
I hope everyone has had a great first week back, and I look forward to all the learning that will take place in term 3!
Educationally Yours,
Mr. Hill
Director of First Program

Students arrive at school as normal, for an 8am start time. After first period, students will board the buses and will return at approximately 3pm. Lab is expected to occur, and students are dismissed from school as normal, 4pm. ASP will occur, as normal.
At the Museum of Modern History, they will have an opportunity to see community places where people lived and worked as well as objects used in Korea around 40 or 50 years ago. They will also tour the Musical Instruments of the World Museum. They will have an opportunity to see different kinds of instruments and to interact with them in a 45 minutes tour.
Students from all grades are currently studying past and present events in social studies. This trip will give them an opportunity to see, interact with and compare real objects from the past to the objects they use today. For older grades, some museum exhibits display things that happened in the past in Korean history.

In the Spotlight
This week we are featuring G1F, and Library Class. Thank you, Ms. Fursova and Ms. Choo.
G1F with Ms. Fursova
This week in math class, grade 1F students have been learning about place value. We began the unit by using place value blocks to represent the tens and ones values of numbers. Later in the week, we used dice to help us choose numbers to put in our tens and ones column so we could draw the number using place value blocks. When we counted our values, we could write a number sentence that expands our two-digit number. We had an amazing time with different activities and now feel very confident with place value for two-digit numbers.
As we learned about exchanging 10 ones to make 1 ten, Eliah said “We can exchange 10 tens to make 1 hundred!”
Library Class with Ms. Choo
This week in the library, students in grades 2, 3 and 4 made new year’s reading resolutions. Grade 3 wrote their goals on bookmarks which will be laminated for them to have throughout the school year.
Jenny wrote, “In 2019, my reading goal is to read 30 fiction books and 20 nonfiction books.”
