Skyline K-8 News
February 21, 2020
From the Principal
Happy Friday!
Thank you so much to everyone who came to PTA last night. At the PTA meeting, I shared our staffing for the upcoming 2020-21 school year. Next year we were allocated one section (or class) for grades K-5. After consulting with our 4/5 team, looking at the projected numbers and MAP data based on the current curriculum, we are planning to continue two 4/5 blend classes. For the middle school grades, 6th grade will be two sections (classes) and one section (class) for 7th and 8th grade. The smaller classes in 6th grade will give us the opportunity to ensure a smoother transition to middle school. In addition, we have been allocated a .5 counselor position so we will have a full-time counselor and a half time counselor. All of the specialist teachers will be back full time with the exception of Mrs. Hiser who is currently .7 for the 2020-21 school year. If any changes occur, I will send out a communication to the staff and community.
Beginning next week, Barbara Sandhorst will be subbing for Miss Allie. I will be introducing her to Skyline K-8 staff and students on Monday morning!
A huge thank you to Mr. Grivel and Mrs. Barten for writing a school song for Skyline K-8, Where Eagles Soar! I have shared a few verses of the song below that we will be learning and sharing with students at our next assembly.
Verse
Up on a hill beneath the blue sky Where trees grow tall and the eagles fly
We are IB - Blue and Yellow Together we learn together we grow
Chorus
Made of red bricks Halls lined in blue
Where Eagles soar Skyline is my school
Verse
Pen in my hand thoughts in my head Calculations and -books that I’ve read
Science is fun, I’m writing my prose Together we learn, together we grow
Verse
Shiny wood floors In our old gym, shooting baskets -into the rim
Mallets and strings the music just flows, Together we learn, together we grow
Verse
Stories to read, adventures to find, we check out books -all of the time
Paint, clay and crafts, our arts’ in a show; together we learn together we grow
In PLC’s this week, we reviewed winter MAP data, looking and comparing fall and winter scores. We will continue this work at our next two staff meetings, identifying areas of success and areas where we can target our instruction, sharing what our Instructional Leadership Team learned at our MTSS Training two weeks ago. To learn more about MTSS, please check out the MTSS district website https://www.pps.net/domain/5007.
Our annual Skyline K-8 Auction is coming up on March 14th! This is a fun night where our community comes together and shows support for Skyline K-8. Many staff members and I will be there and we hope to see you there too. Last year’s auction paid for our educational assistant, Mrs. Ferguson, and over half of a teacher’s salary. You can get your tickets at: skylineauction.com Tickets prices go up March 1st.
Have a wonderful weekend!
All the best,
Mrs. Aguirre

Successful School Surveys
What is the first thing that comes to your mind when you hear the phrase “successful schools?” We believe that successful schools are safe, healthy and welcoming learning spaces that are inclusive for all students. But we want to hear your thoughts.
In 2019-20, Portland Public Schools is again partnering with Panorama Education to gather information students and families that will help us improve student experiences across the district. We will survey students in grades 4, 5, 7-10 on their experiences in their classrooms and schools, and families about their perception of the school their child attends.
The survey will cover topics on the sense of belonging, school safety, school climate, barriers to family engagement, as well as how students are thinking and feeling about diversity, equity, and inclusion in school.
The current launch date is set for January 27th. The student window is scheduled to be open until February 14th, and the family survey until February 28th. Stay tuned for further information!
Please be honest and thoughtful, we value your feedback!
Lunch Volunteers
We would love to continue to have lunch volunteers daily from 11:00 a.m. - 11:40 a.m. for our K-2 lunch and recess after winter break until spring break. Please email or call Debbi in the main office if you are interested in volunteering. Thank you in advance.
Lost and Found
Please take a moment to check the Lost & Found outside the main office when you are in the building!
Student Council
The Student Council met this week and we had a lot to go over and update! Some action items that came out of previous meetings were:
Golden Eagle ticket containers in each classroom rather than just in the office - Update - All core classrooms, ELA, Math, Science, and Humanities, have grade-level containers in their classrooms for middle school students to put their tickets in.
Golden Eagle Tickets being handed out to Middle School students - Update - In Middle School PLC meetings this week and last we had conversations with all Middle School teachers to remind them to hand out golden eagle tickets to Middle School students. I am happy to report that this week we had the most Golden Eagle tickets all year in the Middle School bins!!
Better prizes for Middle School Golden Eagle rewards - Update - We have purchased new snacks that the Middle School students have requested and now can choose from as well as Skyline key chains and bracelets. One ask was for “cool” mechanical pencils. I will be purchasing those over the weekend and will have those ready for next week.
Golden Eagle ticket drawings - Update - Today we did the Middle School Golden Eagle ticket drawing during lunch where they were immediately allowed to pick their prize. Our Student Council President and Vice President pulled the tickets.
Middle School Dance - Update - The Dance Committee met last week and narrowed down a date and began to look at the theme and music. The Committee will be talking to Debbie to see if we can fill out a CUB to reserve the gym, with the money raised from the Friendship Grams, conversations started about decorations, picture-taking abilities, and food/drinks. I am letting the students be in charge of this so I will update as more details come.
Kids Night Out - Update - We have a group of students who have signed up to help support activities for Skyline’s Kids Night Out on May 1st. They are very excited about that!
Assemblies - Update - We had our IB assembly this past Wednesday and our Middle School Student Council members helped to lead it. It is great seeing them presenting the awards; however, I would like to see them do more! I have a group of students who are already meeting to plan the next assembly in March.
Our agenda for Student Council is full, and every week we check off as much as we can. It is a lot of fun working with them and I am looking forward to seeing them take the lead on more around school!
If you have any questions or comments, always feel free to contact me!

State Testing
We have finalized our state testing schedule for the 2020 year. In order to space out the testing for grade levels, accommodate for MAP testing and allow for instruction to continue, our 5th and 8th-grade students will begin their Science testing on the week of April 7th. I will keep everyone posted on what grades will be testing and when we get closer. Please remember that all Opt-Out forms need to be turned in 30 days prior to testing the beginning. It can take 24 - 48 hours just for the paperwork to be processed and the testing department has asked that we not wait until the last minute to ensure that students who have opted out are blocked from the testing site and teachers can make arrangements for what they would like students to do while others are testing.
Please let me know if you need any forms and please know that there is a separate form to Opt-Out of Science. There is not an Opt-Out form for MAP tests, for students can not opt-out of this assessment. The MAP assessment is a district-mandated assessment that teachers use to better inform their instruction, set goals and support student success.
If you ever have any questions or concerns always feel free to reach out to me. I will always share information that I receive from the district to best communicate with the Skyline Community.

Skyline Reunification Drill
May 22, 2020
WHAT: A Reunification Drill practices reconnecting families and students in the event of an emergency such as an earthquake. Every month during school hours, Skyline practices emergency response drills, i.e. fire drill, lockdown, lockout, earthquake. A Reunification Drill builds on in-school drills by involving families.
WHEN: Friday, May 22, 2020, 2-4 p.m. (with a pause at 3 p.m. for normal dismissal)
HOW: For the Reunification Drill, parents, guardians, and/or individuals designated by you to pick up your child/ren will go to the Parent Check-In Station. Those picking up students MUST present a photo ID and be on the "Skyline Reunification Drill Form" pick-up list (to be distributed via email and in backpacks at a later date - keep an eye out!) to pick up a student.
OPTING OUT: This is an important drill that will inform us all on how best to reunite families and students in case of an emergency. We hope that everyone will participate so we can all learn and improve. That said, we understand that taking time off work is not an option for many people. If this is the case, please consider designating someone to pick up your child/ren so that they can participate. On the "Skyline Reunification Drill Form," you'll select "OPT-OUT" and indicate how your student will get home at the 3:00 p.m. or 3:20 p.m. dismissal (bus, Kids Place, normal parent pickup).

Some of you are new to the school or haven’t been to the Auction so we thought it would be helpful to tell you about the Auction and why you should come!
This year’s Auction theme is Rock’n’Roll! You can dress for the theme, casual, or cocktail attire. It’s up to you, we just want you there!
Our Auction is on March 14th and is at NW Events & Environments off Cornelius Pass Rd, on Century Blvd in Hillsboro.
Doors open at 6pm! First, you will check in to pick up your packet which includes your bidder number, info on raffles and dessert dash details. Be sure to get your photo taken in front of Skyline backdrop!
Enter the main room, find a table and enjoy tray passed champagne and appetizers. The first hour people mingle and chat and bid on the silent auction items. A cash bar is open for additional drinks.
During this time be sure to sign up for our epic, annual community parties! It can be a mad dash when they are unveiled so prepare ahead of time by checking your calendar for dates that work. Always popular are Teacher Hosted Parties! Most are kids only but this year we have a kids & adults party too! Thanks to generous host families in our school, we also offer a variety of adult only parties. Community parties are fun and a great way to meet people at the school!
Raffle tickets are an inexpensive way to win BIG! The GOLDEN ticket is $100; the winner gets to pick ANY live Auction item before the Live Auction starts! WOW!! This is often an item whose value exceeds $2000!
The Wall of Wine (WOW) of over 100 bottles, and the Barrel of Beer (BOB) are crowd favorite raffles! These tickets are $25 each or 5/$100.
Dinner is delicious! This year’s selection includes Confit Chicken, or Slow Braised Beef Short Rib, with gouda mashed potatoes, roasted vegetables and salad. Vegetarian plates are available upon request.
Once people are seated enjoying dinner, the LIVE Auction begins! An INCREDIBLE professional auctioneer gets everyone energized! Items to bid on range from class art projects, reserved parking and vacation homes! There are some fun surprises along the way too!
The Live Auction will end in a Dessert Dash, where tables bid together and a lucky guest from each table runs to grab the best dessert to enjoy with their table.
After dessert, checkout begins. Pay, take your winnings out to your car, then dancing usually begins. There are so many laughs, and it is a fun way to meet people in our community! Most of the teachers will be there too!
Most importantly? This is our biggest fundraiser of the year. The money raised goes directly to support YOUR child’s education!

Skyline Green Team
You're Invited!
Please Join PTA's Green Team After School Club!
As a premier-level certified Green School, Skyline has many initiatives that promote environmental awareness and sustainability: the 4th and 5th graders lead the recycling program, food waste is composted in the kitchen and lunchroom, and our classrooms all have party packs that reduce single-use materials, to name a few. But we can do more!
The Green Team Club is an after-school, weekly opportunity for students to get involved and make an impact! The club will meet every Thursday from 3:15-4:45. Students in 4-8th grades are invited to participate. Participation will be initially limited to the first 20 students to apply. The application involves a statement of interest and commitment to participate, as well as parental permission. The forms are available in the office.
The vision for the club is to promote awareness of global and local environmental issues, encourage responsible research, engage in discussions, and take action on a local level. These are the themes and questions we’ll start with...where the kids take them and what actions they create are up to them!
JANUARY
Reduce, Reuse, Recycle! Understand how we can have less impact and where our goods go when we’re done with them. How long does that stuff stick around?!
FEBRUARY
Energy Sources - Where does the energy we use come from? What sources of energy are available? What is sustainable? What about that wind turbine on our playground?!
MARCH
The Threads We Wear: Repurposing, Repairing, and Sharing. What’s the deal with “fast fashion”? How can we upcycle?
APRIL
Earth Day! Where does all that pollution and litter come from? Who does it affect? What can we do about it?
MAY
Grow Your Own - from garden boxes to seed bombs! Where does our food come from? What does it take to get from farm to fork?
Please feel free to get in touch with any questions!

Skyline Gymnasium – hands-on activities
Skyline Cafeteria – potluck dinner
In April, Skyline PTA is hosting a schoolwide STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math) Night! Everyone is invited! Our gym will be filled with different hands-on activities and stations for you and your kids to experience together. There will be a potluck dinner in the cafeteria, too. No need to worry about making dinner ahead of time! Just come! It’s going to be a fun-filled CELEBRATION of all things STEAM.
BUT, we need your help! We’re looking for adult volunteers to run the interactive activities (one volunteer per activity). We've got a list of suggested activities, but welcome your own. Each activity should last about 10 minutes. All activities need to be conducted in the gym itself. No experience in STEAM required! But certainly, if you work in STEAM on a daily basis, PLEASE HELP! Contact me! Email: skylineschoolpta@gmail.com
We hope STEAM Night will spark enthusiasm for STEAM in our children and engage families, foster connections, and encourage lifelong learning!
