Bulldog Bulletin
December 18, 2017
It's not too late to join the Science Fair!
Proposals are due 1/11/18, which means there's plenty of time to join the fun! Information and necessary forms are located on the NBE Website or click HERE.
Dear Bulldog Families,
We have been tying up loose ends from our second nine weeks of learning: presenting learning, assessing to measure growth over time, demonstrating knowledge of numbers and how they work, problem solving, publishing writing, exhibiting increased reading engagement and comprehension, displaying scientific understanding, and much more. When we return from winter break, your student’s report card will be available via Skyward Family Access on Friday, January 5th. As always, please communicate with your student’s teacher if you have any questions regarding academic and/or social growth and achievement.
Our first-ever Family Science in November was a tremendous success. We welcomed approximately 200 families to an engaging science-focused atmosphere. Students conducted experiments, investigated the science of slime, tried their hand at coding with Ozobots and Code-a-pillars, and explored sound. We would like to thank all students and teachers who were instrumental in planning this fun-filled event. Our next family night is quickly approaching. We will be hosting a Family Math Night on Tuesday, January 23rd (please note-this is a date change) from 6:15-7:45p.m. Please join us in making some family math memories.
Winter break is a perfect time to provide some opportunities for children to continue to read, wonder, and explore at home. A great forum for wondering is the New Britton Science Fair. Science fair is a chance for students to take a question through the scientific method and possibly even generate more questions to research. Students in grades 1st-4th are eligible to enter our science fair. For more information, please access our website at http://www.hse.k12.in.us/nbe/home.aspx . Science fair information is available in the banner at the top of our website. We are offering a Science Fair 101 help session on Tuesday, January 9 from 6:30-7:30p.m. for students to receive science fair assistance from actual Lilly scientists. This will be an informal, open-house format in which students can ask questions and get some assistance with their projects before the proposals are due on January 11.
On behalf of the New Britton Elementary staff, I would like to wish you all a restful, relaxing, and joyous winter holiday season. We look forward to continuing a learning-filled 2018 with students returning on Thursday, January 4th.
As always, thank you for partnering with us in education.

--- Handbook Highlights ---
Each Bulldog Bulletin will highlight a portion of the New Britton Student Handbook. This month's focus is Recess.
- Recess supervision is provided by responsible school personnel. For every child’s safety and the school’s liability, parents may not accompany students to recess. Recess will be held outdoors whenever possible. Precipitation, sunshine, cloud cover, wind chill, temperature, etc. are all considered when a decision is made for indoor recess. In general, recess will be held indoors when it is raining or the temperature/wind chill falls below 15 degrees Fahrenheit. Conversely, if the Temperature is at or above 95 degrees Fahrenheit or the humidity is at or above 95%, teachers will use extreme caution while monitoring students at recess. In addition, students will be provided ample amounts of water before and during recess; Recesses will be shortened or may be moved indoors at the discretion of the principal or designee; Children will be watched/monitored carefully for necessary action. These temperatures are based on recommendations from the American Academy of Pediatrics.
- Please make sure as we being to experience colder winter temperatures that your child is properly dressed for outside recess if the temperature permits it. Hat, warm coat and gloves should be worn to keep students warm as they travel to and from school and at recess should the temperature allow it.
