The Sterling Jaguar Journal
February 2020
Principal's Message
Dear families,
Did you know that even on snow days, early releases, and two-hour delays, you can still support your child’s education?! The winter months are always unpredictable when it comes to snow fall and school closings, so it’s important that students continue to practice their skills even when they’re at home. Some ways your child can continue to practice their learning at home include:
• Reading for at least 30 minutes every day
• Listening to reading (i.e. online using RAZ Kids, hearing an adult read to them)
• Writing about what they read (i.e. their favorite part and why, how the character(s) changed over time, a new ending for the story, their connection to the story)
• Practicing their learning digitally by accessing the Sterling Elementary School webpage and clicking on LCPSGo to view the various digital resources provided free of charge to students.
As you continue reading in the newsletter, you'll see the Book Fair is coming this month too! A new book may be another way to get students excited about reading!
If we can support you with your child, please reach out to me and let us know: jennifer.meresshort@lcps.org or 571-434-4580. Thanks!
Sincerely,
Jennifer Short, Principal
Mensaje de la Directora
Queridas familias,
¡Gracias!
Sinceramente,
Jennifer Short, directora
CogAT Information
During the month of February, second grade students in Loudoun County Public Schools will take the online Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT), Form 7, Level 8. The CogAT measures general and specific cognitive skills that allow a student to learn new tasks or solve problems in the absence of direct instruction.
Students’ verbal, quantitative, and nonverbal reasoning abilities are measured by three test batteries, each of which is comprised of three subtests. Students typically complete three subtests per day, for three consecutive school days, to complete all nine subtests. These tests are untimed; however, each day’s testing period usually does not exceed 90 minutes. Students work through each subtest at his or her own pace, and the entire test is read aloud to students by means of pre-recorded audio.
Students cannot prepare or study for the CogAT. Instead, they will have the opportunity to become familiar with test items through teacher-directed practice activities. Additionally, practice questions, administered before the first subtest, will familiarize students with the online testing environment.
Score reports will be available in ParentVUE with the 3rd Quarter report card.
If you have any questions, please contact your child’s school.
Valentine's Day
Note regarding the upcoming Valentine’s Day holiday:
In keeping with current practices designed to protect the health and safety of all children, elementary students in Loudoun County Public Schools are not permitted to distribute candy or other food items to classmates. As Valentine’s Day approaches, it is important for parents to understand that candy brought to school by students, including candy attached to Valentine’s Day cards, will be returned to the parent. Children are permitted to share Valentine's Day cards with each other, but they cannot give out candy.
