Join us at Augustana College for the third annual Global Learning Retreat (GLR), which began in 2015 as a collaboration between Augustana College and Knox College. Through this year's theme of "-Isms Around the World," participants will deepen their understanding of social justice in the global context and explore ways to effect change as global citizens.
The Global Learning Retreat (GLR) offers participants the opportunity to learn about global citizenship and to reflect upon their own experience in the context of our increasingly globalized world. The dominant narrative of social justice in the U.S. is currently recounted through a U.S.-centered lens, and GLR will examine how our understanding of social justice can become more inclusive by considering more narratives from around the world. Through the theme of “-Isms Around the World”, participants will explore how concepts of social justice compare in various countries, and how social identities (such as race, nationality, gender/sex, socioeconomic class, religion, and so on) manifest and are addressed in a global context. In other words, we seek to understand, “what do racism, nationalism, sexism, classism, ableism, and more -isms look like around the world?”
Participants will learn through shared personal experiences, facilitated workshops and reflections, intercultural communication, discussions with faculty and staff experts, and other participatory activities. Please register to attend through the link below:
Please direct any questions to Rebecca Eckart (rreckart@knox.edu). Sponsored by the Office of International Student Services, Steylles Center for Global Studies, and the Campus Life Office.
