From the Director

Dear CDS Community,

We've had an active week at CDS Middle School as students wrapped up their Fall Co-curricular and After School Program (ASP) seasons. On Tuesday, we gathered in the Small Theater to hear teachers share the exciting new co-curricular clubs they'll be offerings for the winter season.

Registration for ASPs ended this morning, and all parents should have received an email from me today indicating which after school clubs your child has enrolled in. Invoices for paid ASPs will be sent out next week. Please contact the MS Office if you have any questions.

Students will have the opportunity to sign up for Winter Co-curricular Clubs on Saturday morning (11/17) at exactly 10:00am. Please visit the CDS Middle School website for the sign up form. Space is limited in certain clubs, so please be up and ready!

Next week is a short week due to Thanksgiving break. On Thursday 11/22, students will attend class in the morning, have lunch and then enjoy some Thanksgiving themed House activities before being dismissed. Buses will depart CDS at 1:15pm.

Have a great weekend!

In Service Day - KORCOS

This Saturday, all CDS teachers will be attending the annual KORCOS conference at GSIS. KORCOS stands for the "Korea Council of Overseas Schools" and is a professional development organization that holds conferences and other professional learning opportunities for international educators within Korea.

The theme of this year's conference is "Compassion, Creativity, Change", so many of the sessions will focus on incorporating those elements into our school. There is a wide variety of speakers presenting on many topics, which will provide a wealth of information and resources for our CDS teachers.

Ms. Van Liew will be presenting a session on "PBL and Creativity in the Music Classroom", where she will explain and guide other teachers in how Project-based Learning works in a music classroom. Take a look by clicking on her slide presentation below!

World Languages Department would like to announce the winners for the 2018 MS Spanish Comic Competition and Expo. All students had done an awesome job displaying communication and curiosity. Students had to utilize their Spanish to create an original comic related to El Día de los Muertos.

The exhibition was amazing! First and second prizes were chosen by a team of teachers according to effort, artistic value, creativity, use of language and culture elements displayed. While audience pick prizes were selected by students who voted when visiting the exhibition. Don’t forget to check the Winner’s Display at the Library!

CDS MS Math Competition

The CDS MS Math Competition results are in! The competition was set-up a little differently than in previous years. Instead of giving one problem for all to solve, the MS Math Department decided to create a theme that the teams could then research and create a TedTalk-like presentation.

The topic chosen was "Math in the Renaissance". The teams were allowed to research any aspect of this theme. The presentations were very interesting and diverse! They included topics on astronomy, art, clocks, and math history. Prizes awarded were certificates to the Phoenix cafe and Dalton Cup points.

Now, on to the results! In third place, Sky Ha and Eddie Koh with their talk on "The History of Mathematics", in second place, Ivonne Jin and Yuchien Chang with their talk on "Astronomy", and in first place with their talk on "Leonardo da Vinci and his Mathematics in Art", Ahjin Kim and Sophia Seo!

Congratulations to all the participants and winners and a special thank you to our judges, Ms. Morillo, Mr. Howell, and Mr. Keel!

8A Physical Science with Mr. Keel

This weeks lab in Physical Science focused on simple machines. Students experimented with different seesaw lever designs and calculated how the lever makes work easier. Students found the mechanical advantage for each design and measured the force to see if it correlated with their calculations.

Life Science with Mr. Howell

For the past week we have been studying genetic disorders in life science class. Today students presented their research findings to the class. Bryan spoke about the disease known as Ehlers Danlos Syndrome. It is a rare genetic mutation which results in very loose connective tissues, such as cartilage and skin. This provides people with the disease incredible flexibility. Bryan included a video of just such a person performing an amazing dance which demonstrates his unusual flexibility.
