You've Heard of Genius Hour But Have You Heard of Clarke County's Inspiration Hour?

As you might know, in our school we use the teaching method of Project Based Learning, or PBL, to help students learn better. A project motivates students to gain knowledge, and they remember it longer. Projects give students the chance to apply the skills they learn in school to personally relevant and real-world situations. Your child also learns skills in PBL such as how to think critically, solve problems, work in teams, and make presentations. These skills will help students succeed in the future, both in school and in today’s work world.

Genius Hour has introduced students to project-based learning through harnessing student's natural curiosity and passions to create solutions and new innovations. We will be using the idea of Genius Hour to encourage our very own Inspiration Hour to empower students to think critically, collaborate, create, and communicate.

What Will Inspiration Hour Look Like?

We worked through the first quarter on the Engineer Design Process and this quarter we will begin to apply what we have learned about the engineering design process to answer the basic challenge of the Engineering for Good Unit:

Based upon what we have learned about plastics from research for our infographics, how can I design a solution to address a negative impact of plastics on our environment?

Students will define a driving question, define the problem, identify constraints and criteria, develop prototypes, evaluate their prototypes, redesign and rethink, and then communicate their results. Students must produce some type of product to address a solution to the negative impact of plastics on the environment. Students will take charge of their learning to drive and direct their course to more authentic learning.

Empowering Students Through Student-Led Conferences

Through the process of becoming active learners steering their own educational pathway through Inspiration Hour, students will take ownership of their learning by sharing with parents and family their learning and results of their hard work. The student-led conference will be conducted by the students themselves providing samples of their work and their plan. Students are nervous about the prospect but so excited to show you what amazing things they can do! Look for conferences to begin the last week in January/beginning of February.
