Report Cards

Report cards went home in folders today. Please look them over, sign it and return the form and envelope on Monday. I will then send your copy home. If you have any questions or would like to meet to discuss your child's progress please contact me. I would like to schedule any meetings during before the end of March. My husband will be traveling a LOT during April and May and it will be more difficult to find the time.

There are two areas that many of the children are having difficulty. One is the calendar. Even though we complete the calendar routine daily, it is still difficult for them when asked individually. The CBM requires a student to give the full date for a random day of the month. For example, if I point to the 3rd, they are to say "It is Sunday, March 3rd, 2013." There is a component of Starfall that reviews the date. It would be a good review. If you have forgotten, the site, it is www.starfall.com. The students enjoy the site. We have an extended version in the classroom.

Another area of difficulty that I see in a large number of the students is in comparing objects. This is something that you can help with by making a conscious effort to extend your conversation. When looking at two object students are expected to list similarities and differences. Some kids look at a ball and they simply see a ball. Others can look at it and they might say it is round, without corners, rolls, bounces, and is smooth. The larger the vocabulary base, the easier it is to see beyond identifying the objects. This might sound a little strange but the greatest academic gift you can give your child is a vast and always growing vocabulary!

Morning Assembly Duty

Our morning assembly duty is the week after Spring Break! Please help your child prepare for their turn by practicing their part and making sure they are at school on time. If you think that you will be unable to have your child to school early on their assigned day please let me know so that I can assign their duty to someone else. It can devistate their day when a child runs in late and finding that someone else already filled in and it's over.

March Fluency Homework

The children are talking about practicing their fluency in their March Homework books. Some can't wait until I check them on Tuesday! I love it!! Please feel free to practice as much as you like. The more a child practices, the more fluent they become. Please use the front and back of each sheet. I am more than happy to add more pages if your child fills up the booklet. Remember, if you have any questions please contact me.

Book Bags

Thank you for helping your child remember to return their Book Bag each day. We have used them a lot this week. All of the children have a new book from guided reading as well as their Texas, Texas book. I am trying to update their word rings. Please use them to practice but return them in the bag as well. This way I do not have to make two sets.

The children are working on their next published books. They will be coming home in a few days. Don't forget to write a note to your child telling them that you enjoyed their story. Please send them back to school so that we can put them in our class library. They will be returned at the end of the year.

A Little Too Comfortable

Our class family is getting a little too comfortable with each other. This hapens every spring. They have spent a lot of time together and have learned each other well. Many are starting to squabble like siblings. They have learned each others "buttons" and have started to use them in a negative way when they feel wronged or left out. We will have another class meeting on Monday to role play some scenarios that I have seen this week. Please talk with your child to remind them to treat others the way they want to be treated.
