The Truth about our Society

Smore Entry #1

The media shows a lot of things. Most of the time, what they are showing is usually biased. A lot of it is propaganda too. For example, advertisements on TV can be good or bad, but since the media is showing it then it's good right? Not all the time. You have to see both sides of it and not always believe what you see. Another example that is going right now is "Islamaphobia". Everyone thinks that Islam is a religion of terror and now people are feared and feel uncomfortable when they see a Muslim around. A non-Muslim can commit the same offense but will not be considered a terrorist because the media wants you to label Muslims as terrorists and have them separately categorize. It is sad because the media has criticized us enough to the point where people are supporting trump because he wants to ban Muslims from entering the United States. On the other hand, the social media is very helpful when I want to find out what is going on in my country. Unfortunately, I find out everything that is going on via Facebook because unfortunately the media here does not want to share the truth. I watch other news broadcasts and show my friends what is on there. I always get the “No way that’s not happening” response because they are surprised about what they see because in America, we are brainwashed to what the government wants to show us.

Reflection on Social Media Smore#2

I think Social Media is very useful and convenient in many ways. A lot of our personal information is stored on social media. For example, Face Timing someone on an iPhone for a business conversation is a great and efficient way to handle an important conversation by talking instead of texting. Personally, I use social media for business like eBay, craigslist, and LinkedIn for my personal business profile. I also use social media like Facebook and twitter to contact people and to see what my friends and family are up to. As you can see there are many different ways social media affects us. Social media can also be dangerous in many different ways. For example, cyberbullying is one of the most common and popular dangers of social media. Fraud, bank accounts, business affiliated websites or programs can also be very dangerous because think about it, if someone hacked into your account and took your money or stole your business, that would be a HUGE danger. This just proves the risk you are taking by putting your personal information and relying on it because it is easy to access and organized and simple. Although, there are many hackers out there that get paid to steal personal information such as: social media account information, social security number, routing numbers for banks, gradebooks for teachers, and of course many different business and work information that is strictly private and definitely should not be distributed. Many people really think that social media is about Facebook, Snapchat, Twitter, Instagram, etc. Those social media websites are also dangerous too. For example, posting statuses, pictures on Instagram, tweets or anything on public social media can also effect the way you can get into colleges or getting a job. Companies and schools definitely want smart and responsible people. If they can tell that you always party and aren’t really responsible most likely they would not want you to associate with their school or business. Think about it, would you want to hire someone that could careless about doing work and expecting to get paid? Overall, social media has its pros and cons, but you just need to keep in mind to be careful with what you put out there because it is basically an electronic tattoo. Once it is out there, it will never go away.

Smore #3 Superbowl Precis

Apartments.com, in the 2016 Superbowl commercial, (February 7) says that apartments.com has good apartments that would meet your expectations and that you should "move on up" by renting an apartment using their website. Apartments.com begins with Brad Bellflower playing the piano on a balloon while floating up higher in the air to explore all of their high class apartments that they offer and reachint to the top confronting "George" and "Weezy" two celecbrities promoting their website to ask what they are "cooking on the grill" with Wezy's funny reply reminding them of his signature apple pie. Apartments.com does this in order to convince its audience that they have fun and up-class apartments using the two celebrtities to promote their apartments. Aprtments.com targets young adule audience, specefically people old enough to rent apartments, but young enough to have a liking to the celebrities, especially the cultured rapper Lil Wayne and they us humorous tone as they uncluded "pie not included" at the end as a very funny joke.

Politicfact Smore #4

“You have to be a citizen to vote, “but with same-day voter registration, “you have places where people just walk in and vote.”- Donald Trump. He said this on “Meet the Press” on the date of Sunday, May 8, 2016 at 5:44 pm. The story started off when the Press host Chuck Todd asked Trump if he supports policies that make it easier for people to vote. Donald Trump doesn’t agree because he claims that there are non-citizen voters in America voting for presidential nominees. He said I don’t think people should “sneak through the cracks” meaning that it will be an easier way for non-citizens to vote. We all know that you have to be an American citizen in order to vote. About this top, you obviously need to know that it isn’t easy for a non-citizen person to vote especially since this is stated in the constitution that only citizens of the United States can vote. My thoughts about this is that it is sad we have a nominee that isn’t willing to trust his own people to follow and go along with what the constitution says and what America has been following ever since this government has started.

“Says Donald Trump “brings in hundreds of foreign workers to replace Americans”” – Ted Cruz. Ted Cruz announced a TV Ad that aired in Indiana stated this quote on May 6th, 2016 at 3:00 PM. Cruz fires at Trump saying he hires illegal immagrints to construct a Florida Club.Ted also said that the immigrants were not necesarrily taking jobs, but they are filling in jobs that Americans would not do. About this topic, you must know that Trump is against illegal immigrants and his planning on deporting them and building a wall so illegal Mexicans can not enter the country. I think Cruz said the truth and could not have said it better. Trump is a hypocrite.

“Says an array of statistics show that conditions in some parts of Baltimore rival that of “The West Bank of Palestine”, “ North Korea,” and “distressed cities in Nigeria, India, China, and South Africa”. – Bernie Sanders. He said this on Thursday April 26

th

2016 at 5:06 PM. Sanders is basically saying that we don’t treat our country enough because it is similar to parts of the world with extreme poverty and places that have no recognition of awareness. You must know that 2 neighborhoods in Baltimore have a lower life expectancy rate than North Korea! Baltimore teens from ages 15-19 face poor health conditions. I have a lot of thoughts on this quote and I am glad he mentioned it. He is right about the problems in Baltimore. I can relate to this because he mentioned the West Bank of Palestine and I have family there and he is saying the complete truth.

We are a nation of Proles! Smore #5

George Orwell predicted our lives today pretty accurate; a nation of proles for the most part. The quote "they were born, they grew up in gutters, they went to work at 12, they passed through a brief blossoming period of beauty and sexual desire, they were married at twenty, they were middle-aged at age 30, they died. for the most part at 60. Heavy physical work, the care of home and children, petty quarrels with neighbors, films football, beer and above all, gambling filled up the horizon of their minds. to keep them in control was not difficult". For most of the people in our society now, they are no different than what Orwell stated. Have you ever thought about how fast technology is growing every day. This is taking a major role in our world today since we revolve around our phones, TVs, radios, computers, etc. Most people in our society rely on the news and TV to tell them what is going on in the world instead of actually being able to research and find out what really is going on. Propaganda is a HUGE role in our society today because we obviously, are starting to believe everything we see on the media. Back then, people did not rely on technology and actually enjoyed the world instead of the games and apps on their phones. In the future, textbooks will not exist anymore and kids will start to learn off electronics. It is sad because books are physically there for us to read and the text in them wouldn’t change. You will never know if what you are reading a book off your phone or tablet is true or not because people can edit the text whenever they want. Would not be surprised if they replaced teachers with robots. Sports gets more attention than the news and our government. Reality TV is a HUGE problem. It is sad that people are starting to watch other people’s lives on TV and watching their drama instead of worrying about themselves. They are literally sitting on their lazy asses being completely unproductive watching someone is live their life. They are basically starting to forget their own. My grandma refused us to buy her an iPhone because she does not feel safe and comfortable with an electronic device like that. She has seen the bad side and she is worried about my generation and the future generations. She knows the old fashioned way is the natural way. We really are a whole bunch of proles that don’t learn the way we should. Many people are starting to take pills like Adderall to help you concentrate and focus. We are relying on medicine to help our natural senses. I am pretty sure there is a big percentage of people that wear glasses because of technology. That is pretty sad that we are relying on something that damages our body parts. The people of our world have literally found a way to drop a bomb and destroy this entire world. I suggest we put the phone down and enjoy the life we were meant to live because we never know when we will not see this world again.

Auto Correct Humanity Smore #8

Technology, you’ve probably heard of it. Perhaps you spent every single day sitting in front of a bright laptop screen. Clicking away as countless amounts of time passes through your finger tips. Every phone, every laptop, every car, and game console is technology. The new iPad , iPhone, iMac, or an iWatch, “All these “I’s but no Us”. Technology is advancing at a faster pace than ever, and we are continually looking for more ways to do things faster and easier to make our lives simpler. The advancement of technology has really taken a huge toll on our society and brains. As technology has advanced throughout the years, us as individuals have become addicted to using it. We as a society have become very addicted to using social media websites such as Facebook, Twitter and Instagram as a means of communicating with friends and relatives over the internet. As time passes by and our addiction to social media can have a great toll on our minds and lives in reality. If this continues the future for us as a whole doesn’t look too well.

I believe that getting rid of the addiction to social media is possible, but not an easy task and requires lots of effort and willingness. The key to this addiction is getting rid of the dependency of technology in our lives as a whole. I believe that turning off the computer, laptop, or whatever it is for at least one hour and doing something productive with your time helps. You could go swim or go do any activity that doesn’t involve you using technology. Enhancing your communication skills is something that we could all make use of. How about taking the time out to talk to our parents about their day, or seeing if a younger sibling could use some help on their homework? Strengthening your relationships with people is something that technology isn’t necessarily assisting us in. Social media in itself takes away from face to face interactions. We don’t meet up for lunch or coffee anymore, we just decide to have a short Facebook chat or exchange a few tweets and that is our way of reconnecting with our friends. Limiting ourselves to inanimate objects is going to eventually limit society as whole. If we recognize the issue early enough, then we may still have a bit of hope left.

Social media sites can be very useful resources if they are used with the right intentions, but that’s the catch. Using the social networking websites for the correct purpose is the hardest thing to do. I believe that as long as I use social media websites and technology as a means of communicating with others till a limit I will be able to harness the power and great responsibility that it comes with. Using social media websites to gain knowledge can be a great. Easy access to all the answers to homework, holding your self back from plagiarizing every essay. Its always there that’s why everyone’s mind are always stuck on the screen.

You say you want a Revolution #Entry 6

A rebellion I can relate to are the Palestinians teenagers rebelling against the Israelis. This is a really important rebellion to me because I have been to Palestine and I have witnessed a lot of stuff most people haven’t seen. This rebellion is very powerful because our brave teenagers defend themselves and their villages against the Israelis with guns, grenades, tanks, and other deadly weapons. The only thing Palestinians use to defend themselves are rocks and mostletovs. I am not trying to express my political views on this situation I just wanted to express my country’s brave rebels against the ignorant predators that they have to face. People were inspired to join the rebellion because it is their land too. It mostly targets young teenagers because their mind-set is very different from the older folks. The older people just go with the flow because they really can’t do anything about it and they don’t want to get in trouble because their families need to rely on them or else they would be on the streets with absolutely no help from the government. Since the villages are really small, the rebels use techniques like whistling outside and using a dumpster with flammable material in there to taunt the Israelis and attract attention and attract the other kids that want to join. Since the villages are small, everyone knows each other so they spread the word pretty fast. These rebellions started when the Israelis kidnapped a Palestinian kid and poured gasoline in his mouth and they lit him on fire and he burned to death. They also try to close the gates to the Muslims’ 3

rd

holiest site in Jerusalem. These rebels are TRUE freedom fighters and have to courage to stand up for the people that died and other cruel things they go through.

Entry: 7 Reflection on the Class

I really enjoyed this class and you made it very interesting and fun to be in. I wasn’t the best student because I’ve been distracted a lot and it is my senior year so I am pretty excited to graduate. You taught me a lesson to keep school as my priority instead of being lazy and delaying everything until the last minute. The way you talk to me does not offend me at all, it shows me how much you care about your students. Honestly, this was my favorite class I have ever had in high school with my favorite teacher. You really impressed me and unlike other teachers, you really do care about your students and waste your time and stress yourself out just to help us graduate and leave high school with knowledge and motivating us to get ready for college. I learned a lot of things from this class. I learned how to write papers a lot better. Most importantly, I learned a very big lesson from you to motivate us to do our work and keep us on track. I know I goofed around a lot in class, but I struggled a lot this semester and learned a very important lesson. Your class was VERY different from other language arts I have had previously because you focus on real world problems. Honestly, I don’t even consider your class a language arts class besides the fact that you taught us how to write papers a lot better and how to write a professional précis. The previously language arts classes were extremely boring. Grammar, reading, and cold reads were not interesting to me. In my opinion, there is nothing I can think of to make your class better and more interesting. You are doing a very good job keeping your class interesting and how you like to talk the way you do to us instead of being one of those teachers that have a monotone voice and makes people want to fall asleep. I was not expecting this class to be the way it is now when I first walked in. The title I chose for my smore was completely broad and not interesting at all. It was “LA 12”. I made it sound boring and too simple because I wasn’t expecting this class to be this interesting.
