WELCOME BACK!

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!

Like many of you, I am making New Year's resolutions. One of my resolutions is to increase my communication through newsletters this year. This is the first that I'll be sending - and it's just to provide you with some reminders and information regarding ELA curriculum, instruction and resources.

If after reading through this newsletter you have questions that are unanswered, please do not hesitate to contact me!

Fountas and Pinnell Benchmark Assessments

As this month begins, I know you are thinking about Fountas and Pinnell Assessment. I know January and F&Ps are synonymous. The window for F&P testing is January 20th – February 9th (click on ELA Assessment Chart link above). The scores are due by February 10th. Please send a copy to Julie Paur, Dr. John Simpson, and your building principal.

REMINDER: Please complete each student’s instructional level on the Fountas and Pinnell Student Folder (see picture above). Be sure to record the date for each test and the book read.

ELA Curriculum

Once again I want to give kudos to the reading specialists, 6th - 8th ELA teachers, and K-5 ELA facilitators for their hard work on completing the curriculum. The ELA curriculum was board approved in September. The K-5 ELA facilitators started work last summer and will continue to improve the Learning Targets. We would like to make this section of the document more user-friendly.

You can find the ELA curriculum on the district's website and in your grade level's ELA file on the C & I server. The file is named "Final Draft Curriculum."

Kudos to everyone that contributed to the work!!!

What are the K-5 Facilitators doing?

At the last K-5 ELA Facilitators meeting, we reviewed the Word Study survey results and agreed the multiple resources available should be streamlined. Before winter break and during break, I developed a Phonics/Spelling/Word Study Continuum for grades K-3. The next step is to develop the phonics/spelling/word study for guided reading levels.
