MR. MELA'S MESSAGE
Dear Families,
Congratulations to the Curtis students who participated in the Tenacity Challenge last Saturday, which was held at Bedford High School. The Tenacity Challenge is an annual academic competition for teams of 7th and 8th grade Latino(a) and African-American students from urban and suburban middle schools across Massachusetts. The competition consists of four events: Leadership Action Project, Global Voices Literary Analysis, Math Quiz Bowl Challenge, and STEM Challenge
The two teams did amazingly well in all of the competitions and proudly placed first in math. It was a great day filled with teamwork, collaboration, passionate speaking, and positive energy. Thank you to the students who participated or helped to support the others and to the parents who attended and/or contributed the success of the day.
Enjoy the weekend,
Jeff

8TH GRADE CAREER DAY AT ECMS
This past Wednesday was the 8th Grade Career Day at Curtis. The Career Day was organized by 8th Grade Counselor Ivar Henningson with technical support from former Curtis teacher Tom Rawson. The career areas that 8th grade students learned about were graphic design, law, journalism, education, firefighting, medicine, mechanical engineering, psychotherapy, entrepreneurship, restauranteurship, and finance. Guest speakers also shared their own backgrounds and paths to their current careers and provided advice to our 8th grade students as they begin to explore their own career interests. Thank you to all of the guest speakers who participated in this year’s 8th grade Career Day and to Mr. Henningson and Mr. Rawson for organizing the day.
RAMADAN
You can wish your Muslim friends a “Ramadan Mubarak!” or “Ramadan Kareem!” During Ramadan Muslim Americans work to become closer to Allah and renew their dedication to Islam. They give money to the poor, volunteer, read the Holy Qur’an, and pray. They also make a special effort to live the core values of Ramadan: self-control, expressing kindness, resolving conflict, spiritual renewal, and purification.
Your Muslim friends might not be able to share a daytime meal with you during this month. Many adult Muslims fast from dawn to sunset during the entire month of Ramadan. Kids may fast some days too. During the day they still go to work and school but they don’t eat or drink until night. There are exceptions to the rules about fasting for a variety of personal health reasons. So if you see your Muslim friend eating during Ramadan you may not want to ask them about it.
REMINDERS FROM THE OFFICE STAFF
- If your child will be absent or tardy from school, please call 978-443-1071, press 1, and leave a message on the absence line stating your child’s name, the date(s) of their absence/ tardiness and the reason. If there is a planned absence, you are welcome to call ahead of time -- you do not need to wait until that day.
- If you will be taking your child out of school for an appointment or picking them up early, please write a note and have your child drop it off in the front office. You must come into the office to sign out your child; if they return to school that day, they may come back in on their own and stop by the office.
- We do not need to know about a change in dismissal plans at 3:10 dismissal time (or 12:45 on an Early Release day).
- Students may only ride the bus to which they are assigned.
- We will interrupt class to have students pick up eyeglasses or Chromebooks dropped off in the office. All other items will be placed on the table outside the office. If your child calls and asks you to bring something to school, please tell them they must come to the office to retrieve.
SUDBURY POLICE YOUTH ACADEMY
The Sudbury Police Youth Academy will be available for ALL middle school students, running in two sessions from July 10th through the 14th and August 7th through the 11th at the Sudbury Police station. Hello, Curtis parents! Your children are creating memories this school year. In order to create the yearbooks in time, they need to be ordered soon. The yearbook is created and designed with student input. With pictures taken all throughout the school, they are creating a memorable book for you and your children to look back on their year.
When ordering, please be sure to use your child's formal name. Jostens uses a computer database to produce the emails that are sent to you. A MESSAGE FROM THE ECMS HEALTH OFFICE
Norovirus: You Don't Want It!
The US is seeing a higher-than-average incidence of Norovirus (the stomach bug) circulating right now. Here are some helpful hints to keep you healthy and prevent the spread at school and home. While ECMS has a low case incidence currently, the virus does spread rapidly in crowded settings
such as schools.
