How does a wind turbine work? Take this Virtual Tour to find out!

Simon and Andy with the US Department of Energy give viewers an incredible tour of the inside of a massive GE wind turbine. Using a GoPro, Simon narrates the ascension up through the turbine. He details each lever turned on or off. The view from atop the turbine, while difficult to get to, is absolutely incredible.

Synchronous vs. Asynchronous Communication - what does that mean?

This is about communication. As it is not about a class or a meeting, but a way that people can communicate (which morphs into the other things, but starts with communication). John Spencer created a 3-minute video to explain the difference between synchronous and asynchronous communication tools. Watch it here.

Check Out our New 100 Spanish Titles for Young Readers

¿Entonces, qué esperas? ¡Empieza a leer!

Starting October 30, 2020, the School Library System’s digital eBook and audiobook platform, Sora, will include 100 new Spanish-language titles for Pre-K and primary age children. This collection offers multi-user, simultaneous access and includes stories, biographies, and non-fiction content to engage young readers. It is a great way to support book clubs, language programs, and more. A full title list is available here.

Co-Teaching for New Teams: Three Day Mini Series

Tuesday, Oct. 27th, 3-4:30pm

This is an online event.

Congratulations! You are going to be working in a co-taught classroom! What does that mean? What does that look like? How does blended or distance learning impact my co-teaching strategies? In this 3 part virtual mini-series, general and special education teachers will work together to create the foundation for an integrated classroom. Using the work of Marilyn Friend, participants will develop a common vocabulary and understanding centered around key elements of a successful co-teaching relationship.


This three-day mini series will take place on:
- October 27, 2020
- January 14, 2021
- March 23, 2021 (Elementary Teachers)
- March 25, 2021 (Secondary Teachers)

This group will work on changing & enhancing systems to support computer science (using the power of computing to solve problems and express ourselves) , computational thinking (purposeful problem solving strategies), and digital fluency (using digital tools to enhance workflow). From Teresa Heatherman: Meeting Student Needs in a Google Classroom

This is a series of mini professional learning workshops to help generate discussion around academic and/or behavioral challenges teachers and students may be facing in our new virtual classrooms. Our discussions will include tips and tricks for how to plan for and create more opportunities for meaningful instruction for all students. Each session will include time for collaborative brainstorming and problem solving directed at individual challenges or teacher concerns. During our time together we will use what we know about high quality teaching, combined with what we know about our students, to help take our virtual lessons to the next level! Topics include:

Google Classroom can be a critical tool to help manage the digital lives of our students. Whether it's creating assignments for students and providing timely feedback, a spot to communicate important updates, or a place for students to access curricular materials, Google Classroom is a dynamic tool. The focus of this fall's conference is: "Writing for Hope, Writing to Learn (online): Research by Teachers and for Teachers." Educators from across the region and the curriculum will share efficient strategies for responding to student writing, share effective online writing tasks, and employ teacher-tested strategies that create hopeful communities of confident writers and increase student collaboration and comprehension through the use of online / hybrid writing. Keynote speaker Dr. Nicole Sieben of SUNY Old Westbury will provide the keynote, author of Writing Hope: Strategies for Writing Success. Regional Distance Learning Reflection Forums - 2 Sessions

This is an online event.

The Professional Learning Team at TST BOCES will come together to facilitate and support discussions and each other as teachers share resources and reflect to improve distance learning for their students, families, and themselves. This will help the team to communicate and assist teachers across the region. This session will leverage breakout groups and collaboration to make learning accessible and meaningful. Please bring a question for the group as well as a strategy, resource, or tool that’s worked to support students, families, and teachers during distance learning.

Topic for November 12: Off the Pedestal: Statues & Monuments in Public Displays

This 3 part series of workshops will give educators the opportunity to explore current events in light of several types of artwork. Participants will read a short selection of text in preparation for each topic and then be led on a guided discussion with Johnson Museum of Art Educators. Participants will discuss the selected readings and selected works of art in a virtual model that they can use with their students. Practice looking at art and linking it to contemporary issues help validate and confirm conversations that students may be having.
