Pinehill School Newsletter
Wednesday 8th June 2022
Message from the Principal
Kia ora tatou,
I hope everyone enjoyed a wonderful three day long weekend with their families. It was lovely to see the children arrive at school on Tuesday with many stories about the adventures they had got up to over the weekend and relaxing time also to recharge for the week ahead.
Every morning and afternoon we have dedicated staff and parents help out at the two main entrances in sun, rain, hail, wind or a combination of all, to support students to cross the road via road patrol and to assist students to cars at the lay-by.
Getting children safely to and from school is a priority for us all. However, particularly of late, we are becoming increasingly concerned with some of the dangerous driving, pulling out and parking particularly on Hugh Green Drive. Today’s newsletter is dedicated to Road Safety reminders. Let’s all do our part to ensure our children’s safety.
Road Safety Reminders - Stopping and Parking - NZ Road Code
For your own safety, and the safety and convenience of others, there are certain areas where you must not park. You risk being fined and/or having your vehicle towed away if you park in these areas.
You must not park or stop your vehicle:
Where traffic signs say you must not stop or park
On the right-hand side of the road, (facing oncoming traffic) except in a one-way street
Where it will be in the way of other people using the road or footpath (including pedestrians)
Near a corner, curve, hill, traffic island or intersection if it will stop other people from seeing along the road
On the road, if you can park off the road without damaging grass or gardens (a controlling authority may have a bylaw and/or signs prohibiting parking on grass verge)
On any footpath
On a traffic island (whether it is flush or raised)
On, or closer than 6 metres to an intersection, unless there are parking spaces or a notice telling you that you can park there
On, or closer than 6 metres to the approach side of a pedestrian crossing
On a marked bus stop or taxi stand
Closer than 6 metres to a bus stop marked only by a sign
In front of, or closer than 1 metre to a vehicle entrance
Alongside another parked vehicle - that is, you must not double-park in any circumstances
On ‘no stopping’ lines (broken yellow lines) marked within 1 metre of the edge of the road, which you may see near pedestrian crossings, intersections, driveways or narrow roads
Where a sign says that part of the road is reserved for specified kinds of vehicles (for example, bus, taxi or good service vehicles) - in many cases, this restriction is marked by a broken yellow line more than 1 metre from the kerb
In a cycle lane
In a bus or transit lane during the hours of operation as indicated by signs on, or closer than 5m to fire hydrant, unless somebody who can move the vehicle stays with it
Without due care and consideration for other road users. You must leave sufficient room between your vehicle and any adjacent parked vehicles to allow easy access
Please read carefully below, the different ways children can arrive or get home from school. Let’s all do our part to ensure our children’s safety.
Ehara taku toa i te toa takitahi, engari he toa takitini
Success is not the work of one but the work of many.
Ngā mihi nui,
Carla Veldman, Principal

Transport at Pinehill
Getting children safely to and from school is a priority for all of us. Our school is situated on two main busy roads, Hugh Green Drive and Spencer Rd. There are times when there is much traffic congestion
and pedestrian activity in this area. This is particularly evident at the beginning and end of the school day. Timing your drive to our school to avoid the peak times can reduce the amount of congestion and keep the traffic moving, especially after school. Other ways parents can assist with reducing traffic include: parking in Arirang Rise, and walking through the back walkway entrance to school or parking in Rathmullen Place and crossing at the road patrol into main entrance of school, carpooling with a neighbour, encouraging your child to catch the bus or to walk to school.
Our school also has a Walking School Bus that families can be part of.
Walking to School
Children walking too and from school do need to use the pedestrian crossings and to take care. Throughout the year road safety is taught within class programmes. You can also help by talking to your children about potential dangers and advising your child on the safest route to get from home to school and back. Adults do need to model a positive road safe message by using the school pedestrian crossing. The pedestrian crossing adjacent to our school gates is manned by our school road patrols from 8.30am - 8:50am in the morning and after school 2:55pm - 3:10pm. Our Year 6 road patrol students are trained by the Police Education Officer and supervised by staff members.
Please ensure you drive slowly in the area outside the school and that you wait until the full crossing is clear before proceeding. Please do not drive over the pedestrian crossing unless the way ahead is clear. Cars stopped on the crossing prevent our road patrol monitors from carrying out their duties. When the road patrol monitors have completed their duties and are coming off patrol, drivers must wait until the crossing is completely clear on both sides before proceeding. Once the road patrols have finished their afternoon duty, the supervising staff member directs any child still waiting back to the hall area with PKC (Premium Kids Care). This ensures your child is safe. Other options for getting too and from our school include the ‘Walking School Bus’, and buses.

Parking at Pinehill School
Parking
https://pinehill.school.nz/school-information/
The carpark on the grounds is for use of staff and authorised persons only. Please do not drive into the grounds or park across the gateway, or near the area where the pedestrian crossing is. Students may wait at the two minute drop off area on Hugh Green Drive to be collected in the afternoon. Please do not park and leave your car in this pick up/drop off zone as it will create considerable inconvenience to other parents waiting to collect their children. By keeping these areas free we keep traffic hazards to a minimum and the traffic flowing.
Bikes and Scooters
Students must be Year 4 or older to ride a bike to school. All riders need to wear a helmet. Parents accept full responsibility for their child’s safety to and from school outside of the school grounds
At school, bikes and scooters are kept in racks outside the property managers room, below room 8.
Why not take a weekend ride with your child to develop their skills and confidence and to ensure they know the safest route to and from school.
Matariki morning tea Monday 20th June, 2022 - All Welcome
Kia ora e te whanau,
Matariki is coming up on the 24th of June with this being the first year it will be celebrated as a national holiday. Matariki is the Māori new year. It is an important time to celebrate the earth and show respect for the land. It is about coming together, sharing stories, acknowledging the past and those who have passed away, planning for the future and feasting on the crops that have been harvested.
We are having a whole school Matariki morning tea where our school community are invited on Monday the 20th of June from 10am - 11am. This morning tea will be held under our Taumaru where we celebrate as a whole school.
The idea is that everyone brings a small plate of food to share.

MINDFULNESS
Mindfulness is our ability to be calm and present at any given moment. We practise this by slowing down and concentrating on one thing at a time like our breathing.
Mindful colouring
One of the ‘calming’ activities that many classes do is mindful colouring. It is a time of quiet engagement. The students find it restful and satisfying.
These examples are from Room 7.
