PARCC Assessment
The PARCC (Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers) is an annual assessment given to all third, fourth, and fifth grade students. It is the state assessment that measures student progress in both ELA and Math. Testing for each grade will be held in the morning, approximate time is two hours. Actual testing time is 60 to 90 minutes, with extra time allotted for directions and computer log in and set up.
Families can help their students by making sure they have a good breakfast, get plenty of rest the night before the assessment, come to school on time, and have any needed eye glasses with them. Please schedule any necessary appointments for after the time your students’ testing sessions are complete.
Please contact Mrs. Green should you have any questions.

Waste-Free Wednesdays at Lisbon
Join in the fun, and help save the environment! Lisbon Elementary School will be running Waste-Free Wednesdays, beginning on Wednesday April 18th. A group of students calling themselves “The Eco-Friendly Garbologists” have noticed the amount of trash LES creates, and they believe that too much is being thrown away. They hope that a weekly Waste-Free Wednesday is a small way to start to make a difference. The idea is that on Wednesday each week, students and staff are encouraged to pack a lunch that produces zero trash. Pack in re-usable containers, or in eco-friendly recyclables! If you’d like to see how easy it is to pack a waste-free lunch, click here! Together, we can make a difference!
Bus Evacuation Drills for Bus Riders
In case of an emergency, it is very important that all students practice how to evacuate the school bus. School bus evacuation drills have already been conducted successfully many times and will be practiced at LES upon arrival to school on Monday, 4/16.
In order to implement this drill, bus drivers will share the following information:
1. To begin the drill, the driver will give the command, "Evacuate by the rear door."
2. Students should leave all loose belongings such as books, backpacks, etc. on the bus.
3. Two older students, designated by the bus driver, should leave the bus first and place themselves on each side of the rear door to assist others. The students should then evacuate from the front of the bus toward the rear door.
4. A word of caution: When leaving through the rear door, students should accept the hand of the assistants and step down from the bust to the pavement. Jumping could cause a fall and result in serious injury. Students may sit on the floor at the rear exit and scoot out the door if they prefer.
5. Upon leaving the bus, students will form a line or a compact group to wait for further instructions.
Feel free to share this information with your child(ren) in order to prepare them for this drill.
Thank you and feel free to contact Mrs. Green (amy_green@hcpss.org) with any questions.
SECURITY PROCEDURES:
A. ENTRANCE TO BUILDING:
During the school day, it is our expectation that when someone buzzes to enter the office that the door is not immediately buzzed open.
- Individual buzzes to get into the school
- Staff member then asks through the intercom…“Hello, may I help you?”
They will look up and see who is at the door. If they have any questions about the response or they just do not know an individual, an administrator will be called.
We ask all individuals to enter one or one family at a time. Please… if another individual is waiting at the door or if there is someone behind you, they will be asked to buzz in as well.
3. Parents must sign in at the Lobbyguard Kiosk. Please make sure that when you are in the building, go to where your business is and then return to the office. It is very appropriate for staff to ask, “do you need help getting where you are going”.
4. Please remember to check back into the office to sign out and leave your sticker.
B. IDENTIFICATION:
This is so crucial. You would not believe the number of individuals who have driven here from home or work and do not have their driver’s license with them. This is also important if you bring a grandparent of your child or someone else with you, they must also have identification. Only an administrator may approve their presence in the school without identification. School administration reserves the right to deny entry to the building to anyone who does not follow proper protocol.
KINDERGARTEN REGISTRATION IS ONGOING:
Parents of children who will be five as of September 1, 2018 must enroll their children in kindergarten for the 2018-2019 school year. Early Registration took place Monday, March 5-Friday March 9. Parents must come to registration with specific documentation, which can be found on the HCPSS website. Please call the front office to make an appointment at 410-313-5506. New student registration for Grades 1-5 will also be accepted by appointment. Online Registration began March 1. Parents with children already in schools will use their HCPSS Connect login. Directions on resetting passwords or a request for assistance. Parents new to the system will need to create an account. Directions on creating an account and using the online registration can be found on www.hcpss.org.
Congratulations
In November, fifth grader Ben Caldwell, won the Lisbon Elementary School Geography Bee. Then in February, he took a qualifying test on the computer to see if he would be invited to participate in the State Geography Bee. A few weeks ago we learned that Ben advanced to the State Bee. Hooray! Ben worked hard studying and preparing for the State Bee that took place last Friday, April 6th, at Maryland Public Television in Owings Mills. We are very proud of Ben for representing Lisbon Elementary School and the Howard County Public School System!

If you would like to donate a book for another special reason (such as a great report card, a lost tooth, to commemorate a great sports season, to celebrate earning a badge in Scouts, Fifth Grade Graduation or any other occasion) please visit www.lisbonpta.org where you can find the form that you need under the Forms & Documents link. Thank you for your continued support!
Testing Reminders
Parents, please be mindful of our upcoming testing dates for the months of March, April and May. On each of the test dates, we will be starting our testing sessions in the morning. It is imperative that we have the students in the testing grades present when our school day begins at 8:40 a.m. Once a testing session begins, we will not be able to allow students to enter the testing areas. Please be mindful of this when scheduling appointments such as dentist, doctor, etc. Of course, if your child is ill, please keep them home and we will gladly have your child sit for a make up session when they return healthy to school!
We would also like to remind you of some good test taking strategies to reinforce with your child prior to taking these tests, or any test. It is important that your child have a good night’s sleep and eat a healthy breakfast prior to and on testing days. We have also been encouraging the children to carefully read the questions/passages and answer choices before making a selection or answering with fully developed responses. We have also taught the children to go back and double-check their work prior to saying they are finished.
Prior to spring break, the students were given a slip of paper with specific testing dates and times to add to their agenda book pages. Please be sure to check your child’s agenda book for their testing dates.
As always, thank you for your continued support in educating all of our children!
Screen-Free Week Challenge
The Maryland General Assembly, Delegate Bob Flanagan, Delegate Trent Kittleman and Senator Gail Bates are inviting the students of Howard County elementary schools in District 9 to participate in the “Screen-Free Week Challenge.” Younger siblings are also encouraged to participate.
They hope that interested students will accept this challenge by giving up television (and other electronic devices with screens, unless it is school-related) for seven consecutive days and engaging themselves in more productive, creative and educational ways to spend their time. This will happen in conjunction with National Screen-Free Week 2018 from April 30th thru May 6th.
Students who successfully complete the “challenge” will receive a personalized certificate. Participants should mail the completed form to the Office of Gail Bates by Friday, June 1st.

Science Fair
Your child is invited to participate in this year’s Science Fair on Monday, May 14th during the Lisbon Lions Lollapalooza from 6:30-8:00 pm. The Lollapalooza is a popular event that showcases the remarkable things our extraordinary students have done this year at Lisbon Elementary School.
If your child is interested in doing a Science Investigation, Collection, or Invention at home, please visit the Lisbon Elementary School website (les.hcpss.org) to download documents with further information and instructions. Once your child has identified a project, also download, complete, and return the Intent to Participate form by Tuesday, May 1st. (If you do not have access to a computer, please request a hard copy of the specific forms you need from Mrs. Drews in the office.)
Students who elect to participate will have their name read on the morning announcements and their name printed and hung on a hallway wall display. Directions on where and when to bring in the projects will be shared in future Lisbon Lines.
We are excited to highlight the commitment shown and the hard work done by the LES students this year. Many thanks for all of your support at home and in the building this year.
* Students in any grade may conduct a Science Investigation to answer a question/problem. Students will use The Scientific Method to learn the systematic approach to solving a problem.
** Students in Kindergarten, First or Second grade may submit a collection. Students will collect and organize something of interest, answering questions related to observations made while exploring their world.
*** Students in any grade may submit an invention. Students will use the engineering design process to create an invention that will solve a problem or answer a question.
PTA County Council Representative
The PTA is in search of a PTA County Council (PTACHC) Representative for next school year. This volunteer would attend a monthly meeting (generally the first Monday of the month at 7:30 p.m. until about 9:00 p.m.) at the Homewood School in Ellicott City (next to the Board of Education building—about 20 minutes from Lisbon). After the monthly meetings, the Representative would share feedback with our PTA.
This is a great opportunity for someone interested in the goings on of our highly ranked school system. All PTAs in the county attend each month as well as a representative from the Board of Education. Guest speakers include the superintendent and county-level administration. You would be the first to know what’s going in our schools! PTACHC representatives also vote on positions and policies of the PTA.
If interested, please contact a nominating committee member: Cathy Datz (cathydatz@yahoo.com) Debbie Golden (dmegolden@gmail.com) or Tracey Heller (thh91@msn.com)
