Hello Cluster 3 Families!
We hope everyone enjoyed their Winter Break. This week students completed their mid-year Math iReady Diagnostic. This will help with creating semester 2 WIN groupings coming up in a few weeks.
Along with completing the iReady diagnostic, we also started Unit 4: Proportional Relationships and Percentages. This unit is broken up into two sections. Section 1 is Percentages as Proportional Relationships and Section 2 is Applying Percentages. As usual, there will be a quiz after section 1 is completed and a test after section 2 is completed.
Here is a link to our Unit 4 Family Resource Information Sheet.
Below is a further breakdown of the lessons that will be taught in Section 1 of Unit 4: Proportional Relationships and Percentages.
Section 1: Percentages as Proportional Relationships (Lessons 1–7 + Quiz)
Students can determine missing measurements in proportional relationships involving fractional quantities or percentages. Students can also represent proportional relationships using tape diagrams, tables, double number lines, and equations.
Lesson 1:
- I can visualize a percentage on a grid.
- I can calculate the percentage of a number.
Lesson 2:
- I can use the constant of proportionality to solve problems that involve fractions.
Lesson 3:
- I can use a table to determine an unknown value in a proportional relationship.
Lesson 4:
- I can use tape diagrams and tables to represent adding or subtracting a percentage from100%.
- I can determine the new amount if I know the original amount and the percent change.
Lesson 5:
- I can write an equation to represent adding or subtracting a percentage from 100%.
Lesson 6:
- I can use double number lines to represent adding or subtracting a percentage from 100%.
- I can determine the original amount if I know the new amount and the percent change.
Lesson 7:
- I can determine the original amount if I know the new amount and the percent change for one-step and multistep problems.
Best,
Mike Casciano

Social Studies w/ Mr. Kirkaldy
Learning Targets:
- I can correctly place historical events on a timeline.
- I can interpret information on a timeline to answer questions.
- I can locate important physical features of China and label them on a map.
This week in Social Studies we are wrapping up our study of Ancient India and South Asia by doing some work with timelines. We will continue to revisit timelines throughout the year to practice creating and using them as a way to keep track of events in time in a visual, and hopefully helpful, way. Next, we're moving on to our next big area of the world: China. We'll start by looking more closely at the geography of the country and how it influenced how and where people live, much like we did with Ancient India. Students will eventually be making topographic maps of China using layers of paper to represent the geography of the area.
Showing off!
How did Ashoka get his message across?
Edicts! And we made our own!
Science w/ Ms. Smith
Learning Targets:
I CAN Investigate how evidence of chemical reactions indicates that new substances with
different properties are formed.
I CAN observe and measure the properties of matter.
I CAN differentiate between physical and chemical properties.
I CAN identify materials based on their properties.
We have begun our chemistry unit by examining physical and chemical properties. Next week students will be introduced to atoms and their connections to the periodic table.
ELA w/Ms. Fitanides
Standards:
- I can read and discuss books on grade level and provide evidence from the book to support my ideas.
- I can take notes on important sections of the book that help reveal an author's message.
English classes are starting Social Issues Book Groups this week. Students have chosen books that are of interest to them from a variety of issues present in society today including immigration, racism, identity, etc...
We will be reading these books for the month of January. Kids have a reading calendar for daily reading, a note sheet to take important notes to use in discussions, and you should see your kids finishing up reading at home each night.
Our focus for the novels is similar to that of The Outsiders - setting, characters, conflict, growth and change, themes. Students will be asked to identify and support their analysis of these terms in their books with evidence.
Thank you to LICSW Kendal Donase, Officer Margaryan, & Sports Layout & Copy Editor John Vitti for speaking to us prior to our Outsiders projects.
