TROJAN Update
January 15th, 2017
The January Doldrums and What to Do About It!
When we look back at grades for the first six weeks of the Spring semester, we often notice a decline. Students, particularly freshman, have conquered the first semester, have taken their first set of "real" finals, and generally have worked hard. There is a natural tendency to take the foot off the pedal and coast for some period as January begins. Teachers will remind students that these next two months are critical to continuing the success of the first semester or righting the academic ship and getting back on track. As parents, this is a great time to ask specifically about how things are going, armed perhaps with some AERIES data. Ask your student about the preparation for a Socratic Seminar, how the next section in Math is progressing, or how the reading in English is going. Compliment him or her on the delicate balance of participating in a sport or club or band, and how proud you are of them. Help them along with us weather this potential storm and sail on confidently!
Last week, we had a tremendous Freshman Assembly brought to you by our Link Crew team. The team of staff advisors (Ms. McClelland, Ms. Yannes, Ms. Greeson, and Mr. Dawsari) along with some amazing juniors and seniors pumped those freshman up, sending the same message of hope and resilience described above. In particular, current PHS junior, Domenic Chaffer, delivered an impassioned speech describing his initial struggles at PHS and his remarkable turnaround story. Domenic is now earning better than a 3.0 GPA and his courage to share his story was an inspiration for us all. If I don't get his speech in this update, watch for it in an upcoming message.

Recent Wrestling Results for PHS
Of all the athletic pursuits our students are involved with, it might be wrestling that stands out as the most empathetic. Watching a PHS wrestling meet is a real joy - each member of the team, boy and girl, have a common task: to use technique, strength, and tenacity to outpoint or pin their opponent. Each wrestler knows the tough journey to get to the competition mat and somehow, that translates into a true team effort. See the recent results below for PHS, including a dominating performance over Sonoma last Wednesday. Click on the YouTube link beneath this article for the feed from the Sonoma match up.
If you want to see what it's all about, circle January 25th or January 31st on your calendar, the next two wrestling home match ups versus Piner and Analy respectively in the Multi.

The Princess Project - Prom Dresses
My name is Alisa, and I’m a long-time volunteer with The Princess Project: a nonprofit organization that provides free prom dresses and accessories to teens who would otherwise be unable to attend their event. Founded in 2002, we serve more than 5,000 teens each prom season at five locations across California—including our newest location in Sonoma County!
Teens often tell us that they learned about The Princess Project through a teacher, guidance counselor, or club moderator. And that’s why I’m writing to you today: we need your help getting the word out to your students!
Dress giveaways
Getting a dress is simple. Teens make an appointment online to attend a dress giveaway in late March. Dress giveaways will be held at our pop-up shop in the Petaluma Village Premium Outlets (space 800, next to Oshkosh B’gosh). Online sign-ups will begin in late February and teens can access the sign-up form at our website.
When teens arrive for their appointment, fairy godmothers will help them pick out dresses to try on and make their selection. Our dresses come in all colors, sizes, and shapes—short and long, frilly and sleek, bedazzled and simple. And we’re not kidding about “all sizes”: we stock XS to 5X and every size in between.
Requirements for participation
All teens need for admission to a dress giveaway is a valid high school ID and a signed participation waiver (which will be provided during the online sign-up process). They can also bring one guest to help them shop.
Promotion suggestions
Educators have shared information on The Princess Project in daily announcements and school newspaper articles and ads. They’ve also hung flyers in common areas and distributed them during homeroom and club meetings. If you would like copies of our flyers, please contact us and we will email or mail them to you.
Questions
If you have questions about The Princess Project or the dress giveaways, please visit our web site for more information or send us an email.
Thank you in advance for helping us serve Sonoma County teens!
