Welcome!!
Dear Lewiston-Porter Intermediate Education Center Families,
As the 2021-22 school year quickly approaches, it is my pleasure to welcome everyone back for another year at the Intermediate Building. I hope you and your families are healthy and doing well. It’s great to be back celebrating another school year. I am ecstatic for the opportunity to serve as the IEC principal for another year, and our staff is excited to welcome our students. I know many of you are eager to return to school, and are getting ready for the first day.
A new school year presents new beginnings—I am excited to begin the new year. There will be new schedules, new classes, new faces, new materials, new grade levels, and our new theme. Along with all the exciting new experiences, there will also be new challenges. The start of the new year will be similar to how we ended in June. We are committed to ensuring a safe and healthy environment for all students to excel in the 2021-21 school year. This year our school theme is GREAT HABITS, MAKE GREAT LEADERS! WE ARE ALL ALLSTARS!!! Together we will grow, learn and challenge ourselves academically, behaviorally, and socially, as we get stronger and smarter each day. We welcome your family to a school that will explore Sean Covey’s “7 Habits of Happy Kids” as they learn in a dynamic, literacy-rich environment.
As you begin the 2021-22 school year at the Intermediate Education Center, we are committed to our mission, One Purpose. Your Pathway. Our Promise. Our promise is to ensure that when students leave Lewiston-Porter, they will be ready to face the world with confidence in themselves and what they can contribute. While students are here, they will be challenged to grow along their pathway and discover their personal best because we promise to give them our best. Our goals for the 2021-2022 school year are to support each learner in defining success in his or her own way, to design innovative learning environments that support learners in achieving their personalized goals and to build a culture and climate that supports the needs of all Lewiston-Porter community members.
The IEC operates on a six-day rotation to offer students enrichment and special areas. All students will benefit from instruction time in Art, Music, Library Media, Technology and S.T.E.A.M. (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math). The focus of the S.T.E.A.M. special will be to extend classroom learning of the NYS New Science Standards with an emphasis on the engineering practices and cross cutting concepts. Students at the Intermediate Education Center benefit from Physical Education for forty minutes every other day.
It will be an exciting and rewarding year for you. As a new school year approaches, it allows us to work hand in hand with all families to ensure the very best for all children, in order to achieve our vision. The first day of school is Tuesday, September 7, 2021. Please join our school Twitter account @LewPortIEC for updates prior to school and throughout the school year. Our monthly newsletters, celebrations and calendar will be on there, along with other fun school events. This year, we will be offering free breakfast and lunch to students for the full 2021-22 school year due to a federal grant.

Once again, I am honored to serve the Lewiston-Porter family. I am humbled and proud to welcome our LANCER Family back to campus. I am very proud to work with a fantastic team that pours great energy and love into their work with your children. We look forward to working together as partners in your child’s education, helping to stimulate a love of learning and joy in discovery, in a school where children are placed first. Every step along the way, we are committed to supporting your child’s optimal growth and development.
We are looking forward to a special year at the IEC. It is truly a privilege to be a part of a community where parents, teachers, and students care for each other, and strive to build positive relationships that support academic and social growth. It takes a whole village to raise a child. If you have any questions, please contact me at 716-286-7252.
We hope your family continues to enjoy this summer. We look forward to welcoming your child to the new school year.

Dear Lewiston-Porter School Community,
Once again, we hope you are all enjoying the final days of your summer and have found time with family and friends. All of us at Lewiston-Porter are excited to welcome your child(ren) back to school for full-time (5 days/week) in-person learning. It is going to be a great year!
I previously wrote to you regarding our initial Health and Safety Protocols for the 2021-22 school year. These were developed working with all Niagara/Orleans County Superintendents in consultation with the Niagara County Department of Health (NCDOH) and were adopted by our Board of Education on Monday, August 23, 2021. The LP plan was based on CDC transmission levels and as a school district governance team, we felt the protocols, as developed, were responsive to the feedback received from the school community. Since adoption of those protocols, COVID-19 positive cases and COVID-19 transmission levels in Niagara County have continued to rise. Currently, Niagara County is at the RED transmission level.
As you may be aware, Governor Hochul has maintained that she would issue a full mask mandate for schools once in office. As anticipated, on Friday, August 27th the New York State DOH issued a full mask mandate for all K-12 public schools.
Per NYSDOH Health Commissioner:
“Effective immediately, in accordance with the Commissioner's Determination issued pursuant to 10 NYCRR 2.60, any person over the age of 2 (including all students, personnel, teachers, administrators, contractors, and visitors) must wear masks at all times indoors in P-12 school buildings, regardless of vaccination status. People with medical or developmental conditions that prevent them from wearing a mask may be exempted from mask requirements, as documented by a medical provider.
After careful review and consideration of CDC recommendations for face coverings/masks in school settings, the NYSDOH, hereby adopts such recommendations, imposing them as requirements, where applicable, until this determination is modified or rescinded. Accordingly, universal masking of teachers, staff, students, and visitors to P-12 schools over age two regardless of vaccination status, is required until this determination is modified or rescinded. With the importance of in-person learning, schools should implement physical distancing to the extent possible within their structures but should not exclude students from in-person learning to keep a minimum distance requirements.”
Pursuant to NYS law, Lewiston-Porter CSD and the Lewiston-Porter Board of Education will enforce the NYSDOH Health and Safety and School Reopening protocols, effective immediately. We apologize for the late notice from the NYSDOH; this unfortunately has been the New York State modus operandi since this all began in March 2020. (It should be noted these are the same protocols that the Lewiston-Porter Board of Education adopted for the RED transmission level.)
NYSDOH Health and Safety Protocols
Area of Impact Protocol Instructional Model 5 days per week, full-time instruction for all students Classrooms Face coverings/mask - Mandated (per NYSDOH order) 3 ft’ of distancing (to extent practicable) Indoor congregate areas (e.g., hallways, passing between classes) Face coverings/masks - Mandated (per NYSDOH order) Transportation Face coverings/masks - Mandated (per NYSDOH/CDC order) Cafeteria 3 ft’ of distancing (to extent practicable) Face coverings - Mandated when not eating/drinking (per NYSDOH order) Outdoors No Face coverings required
Please understand that all students attending a Lewiston-Porter Central school building for in-person learning will be required to follow these protocols at all times. This is required under New York State law much the same as certain vaccinations are required under law for attendance at school.
Enjoy the final week of the summer break. We look forward to welcoming our students and families back to Lewiston-Porter for 5 days/week, full-time instruction on Tuesday, September 7th.
Sincerely,
Paul J. Casseri,
Superintendent of Schools
