Triton Times
Eastlake Middle School 3.4.19
It has been a busy six weeks. Please make sure you check on your student's grades as they have been posted and sent home. Contact a counselor or teacher(s) with any concerns. I hope to see many of you at the next Coffee with the Principal on March 12th at 8:30 AM in the library. Let's finish this semester in a strong manner. We have a few items that you need to review for planning and reflective purposes:
A. Vaping Presentation. There has been concern by our parents and staff about this issue that seems to be gaining popularity with students. We want you to be informed on how you can help monitor and support your student. We tentatively have the American Lung Association coming out on March 12th at 6:00 PM to discuss the issues with vaping and its harmful effects on young people. We will have final confirmation shortly, but please pencil in the date. It's an important conversation that needs to happen!
B. Promotion. Due to lack of credit recovery opportunities, for this year the Board will allow for a validation process whereas students who pass their second semester classes will receive credit for any past classes in that subject area(s) in which they did not pass. They will be allowed to participate in this year's ceremony. It's a great opportunity for our 8th grade students to buckle down and keep moving forward. We do not know the process for next year's class. I do have the right to review case by case situations that are unique. Please contact me with any concerns.
We will have several meetings from now until June 5th about promotion. Our promotion will take place on June 5th at 5:00 PM at Otay Ranch High School. Attendance is limited by fire code and expect that each family will receive five tickets to the event. There will be a streaming video of the event. We are trying to secure shuttle services and creating special drop-off spots for Uber/Lyft. We will send more information home in the next few months.
There will also be several 8th grade events at the end of the year and school will still be open to 8th graders on the 6th and 7th.
C. MOMO. Unfortunately, there has been a serious and dangerous online challenge/dare called Momo. Please see this LINK for more information and talk to your students about this concern.
D. Registration. We will be sending out registration material shortly. We are tentatively planning for mid April for our first registration night for new parents. We are hoping to have a more efficient and effective process. If you are are a returning parent with no changes (medical, address, etc.), you simply have to go to the Online Registration Portal and simply click on update. No need to go to the school! Information forthcoming.
E. SBAC Testing. Our students will be participating in testing from April 15 to May 17. During this testing window students will display proficiency in English, math and science (8th grade only). The test is a good evaluation of our student's abilities. We utilize the data to inform practices and support systems
F. Library and Tutoring. We are going to continue keeping our library open Monday through Thursday from 3:20 to 4:20. Tutoring will be provided on Wednesday and Thursday by our ELH tutoring program.

Triton Trait of the Month (Enthusiasm)
Yeah!
Enthusiasm is putting your whole heart into what you do. Whatever the task, no matter how big or small, it will always turn out better if you put your whole heart into it! A great thing about enthusiasm is that it's contagious! Your spark of energy and excitement can ignite others to live their lives with enthusiasm.
Its also important to remember that enthusiasm is be more than just showing energy and excitement. It is also represented by a passion for a cause or project. One does not have to be the life of the party to build enthusiasm. By treating even the smallest, insignificant jobs as important, paying attention to details even when the newness wears off, and aiming to be an encourager to others, we build relationships and share enthusiasm with everyone around us.
