Our New Beginning

Looking Ahead to October

Fall Fundraiser - October

Our first fundraiser of the year will be sent home to families on Monday, October 3rd. This fundraiser will take place entirely online so families can shop, pay, and receive their items all from home. The collection has many items including kitchen supplies, holiday items, candles, chocolates, wrapping paper, and personalized items.

We hope you can help support us! NSE PTO uses the funds raised through our fundraisers to support our school (and many fun events!) throughout the year!

NSE Fall Festival Celebration - Monday, October 31st

NSE will celebrate the fun of the fall season on Monday, October 31st. Students are welcome (but not required) to wear a costume to school that day. Costumes must follow the school dress code and cannot have a weapon as an accessory. Our day will culminate in a costume parade open to families (weather permitting). The costume parade will take place around the NSE school building starting at 2pm. If you would like to attend, please plan to arrive around 1:45pm and find a spot on the outside of the sidewalk. Parking will be limited on school grounds. Once filled, please park at Smyrna Municipal Park.

Please note students are not able to change into their costume during the school day so they must arrive in costume if they choose to participate.

NSE Touch-a-Truck Event

On October 19th, NSE will welcome the Smyrna Police Department, the Smyrna Fire Company, the Clayton Fire Company, Delaware State Police Aviation (helicopter), the Delaware State Police Mounted Patrol, and the Delaware State Fire School for our first ever Touch-A-Truck assembly! Our state and local agencies will do demonstrations and talk to our students about safety in a variety of areas. We are excited for this partnership and a day of fun and safety learning!

Information for Families

Please be sure your 1st - 3rd grade students have a pair of headphones for use with their Chromebook. This is a vital supply to help them access the technology used in the classroom on a daily basis.

If you are interested in donating headphones we are happy to distribute them to students in need.

A few reminders

Please send your child to school each day with:

  • a water bottle
  • a snack
  • an extra pair of clothes to keep in their bookbag
  • a charged Chromebook (1st-3rd grade)

Parent/Teacher Contract

At NSE, we believe student success is achieved through a strong partnership through the school and home. Please see below for the SSD School-Parent Compact and Parent Involvement Guidelines.

Contact Information

If your family has moved at any point since last year or if there are changes to your phone number or email address, please contact our Main Office at 302-653-8589 as soon as possible to update this information. Having the most up-to-date contact information is crucial to providing your family with timely information, updates, scheduled events, and in the event an emergency arises.

Interested in being a NSE substitute?

If you are a NSE parent and are interested in substituting at North Smyrna Elementary School only, please stop by the Main Office and speak with Mrs. Berryman to get more information. We have flexible schedules and a great team! We hope you consider joining us!

Chromebook Usage & Care

Please see below for additional information on Chromebook usage and care to help ensure your 1st-3rd grade child is ready to use his/her Chromebook each day:

  • Charge the Chromebook nightly.
  • Place the Chromebook back in the bookbag before each morning.
  • Treat the Chromebook with care and avoid placing food or liquid near it.
  • Keep the charger with the Chromebook to avoid loss.

We are excited that students have the opportunity to use technology across home and school as they build a skillset that they will use throughout their lives.

Chromebook Student Accounts

As our students begin the year working with district Chromebooks and district Google accounts, we want to share information on student IDs and passwords needed for logging in:

  • For all students, their userid is firstname.lastname. If there are students with the same name in the District, we append a “1”, “2”, etc onto the lastname (john.smith, john.smith1, john.smith2). If this applies to your child, you will be notified.
  • For all K-6 grade students, their password will be SSD###### with the “######” being the student’s School Lunch Number, and it will stay the same from year-to-year.

If you have any questions with logging in, please contact your child's teacher.

Student Attendance

Regular attendance is a critical component to a successful school experience. We understand students may need to be absent for a variety of reasons throughout the year. Upon returning to school, please send an absent excuse note in with your child to turn in to your child's teacher.

A Note From Our School Nurses, Mrs. Hastings & Mrs. Warner

What are the responsibilities of a school nurse?

Most people have interacted with a school nurse over their school career. You may remember a school nurse applying bandaids, administering medication, and sending sick children home. While this was the image years ago, times have definitely changed! School nursing has evolved into a specialized strand of the nursing profession that supports the well being, academic success, and the life-long health and achievement of students. Our school nurses support a positive approach to normal development, promote health and safety, provide support with health concerns, and actively collaborate with families and staff to ensure the health and welfare of our students.

What difference does a school nurse make?
The work of a school nurse has been noted to improve student health and impact achievement and success. The work of school nurses has been shown to decrease absenteeism and improve students' engagement in school. School nurses collaborate with the NSE administration and staff to promote a healthy, safe, and nurturing school environment for all. They work diligently to establish strong and trusting relationships with families so that you can be confident that your child’s health needs and injuries are appropriately handled during the school day.

Who are the NSE School Nurses?

At NSE, we are fortunate to have the expertise of two wonderful school nurses: Mrs. Hastings and Mrs. Warner. Both nurses interact with our students on a daily basis and coordinate their care with their families and our staff.
