National School Library Month!

April is School Library Month and it is a great time to talk about WHY the school library is important! Did you know that in South Carolina, we have certified school librarians in our public schools? This is FANTASTIC because it means that the person in your school library (including me and Sarah) have Master's Degrees from an accredited library school. We are also certified teachers. We are so lucky to live in South Carolina because that is not the case in every state. Why is it important to have a certified librarian in your school? Research shows that students who go to a school with a certified librarian (who has a dynamic library program) score better on standardized tests than students who do not. This link takes you to an awesome infographic all about school libraries and school librarians! Check it out: http://www.ilovelibraries.org/sites/default/files/AASL_Supplement-poster_LORES.pdf

* What's your favorite Easter candy? Use the Excel spreadsheet with your students before spring break! Good for practice reading a graph and analyzing data!

* April is Poetry Month - Try the "Magnetic Poetry Board" - fun to use with SMART Board! Use Read, Write, Think to introduce your students to a variety of poetic forms: theme poems, acrostic, diamante, etc.

* Which Came First - the Chicken or the Egg? - Nice photos of hatching chicks and a video!

* Write a "Spring Cinquain"- a five line poem. Begin with words such as butterfly, caterpillar, daffodil, robin, etc. - Download the template!

* Journey North - Hummingbirds (and more) - Excellent photos and informational text. Encourage your students to read about their favorite!
