Gladiator News
Dr. Hector P. Garcia Middle School
October 24-28, 2016
Greetings Gladiator Community,
This week we will be celebrating Red Ribbon Week. The National Red Ribbon CampaignTM was founded after the death of DEA agent Kiki Camarena in 1985, and its mission is to present a unified and visible commitment towards the creation of a nation that is drug free. This year’s theme, “YOLO. Be Drug Free,” was created by two sixth graders in Pennsylvania. Our students entered a "YOLO" poster contest. Winners will be announced Monday. I'll share those names next week.
Our counselors have a lot of activities and lessons planned for next week around You Only Live Once: Be Drug Free. Below are the dress activites for our staff and students, we'd love to have everyone participate:
Monday: wear red
Tuesday: wear a hat
Wednesday: team jersey
Thursday: twin day
Friday: school spirit
Gladiator Games was a success on Friday! We couldn't have asked for better weather. In addition to Gladiator Games, the students listened to a representative from MADD on the dangers of drinking and driving and had class lessons on making positive choices in life. Many thanks to all our parents that volunteered to make the event a success. I will share a highlights video next week in the newsletter. Thank you for your generous donations. I continue to be amazed by the support we receive from the community. A special thank you to our PTA Board for all of their hard work and effort.
Chuck Barksdale, computer lit teacher & yearbook sponsor, shared this article with me regarding screen time and our society. The article includes some tips for parents regarding healthy digital media use. We've noticed the students having a harder time putting the electronic devices away during unstructured times at school. We will be discussing this issue with the student body. We would appreciate your support on that front as well. The article is a great one to share and discuss as a family.
