JAGUAR UPDATE
Sunset Valley Elementary 9/2/16
Jaguar Corner
It was GREAT to see everyone at the Back to School Picnic! What a FANTASTIC event! Wow! Thanks to our AWESOME PTA for putting this together. This is such a busy time of year, I thank all of you for your time and dedication to SVE. These types of events are a great reminder of why SVE is such a great place. Thank you for your interest, support and care for your child's education.
We are very excited to have our special guests come and have lunch with the kids at SVE! It is always great to see each of you and the kids LOVE IT!! Please make sure you have the correct lunch time when you come and visit. We'd be sad if you came to the wrong lunch shift! At SVE, due to liability and student safety concerns, we ask that guests not go on the playground for recess at the conclusion of lunch. If you have relatives that will be coming up to visit, if you could please make them aware, we'd be very grateful.
R7 Standards Based Grading
In our transition to Standards Based Grading and Reporting we want students to understand that the final mark they receive for a reporting standard on the grade level progress report will not be negatively impacted by learner behaviors. Effort, behavior, extra points, etc. are not figured into a final grade. Instead, teachers will indicate progress to parents regarding skills necessary for long-term academic success via the Characteristics of a Successful Learner section of the progress report. This updated area of the progress report will inform students and parents about learner behaviors (i.e. following written and oral directions, demonstration of organization, etc.). The Characteristics of a Successful Learner Indicators are defined below.
Characteristics of a Successful Learner Indicators:
4 – Student consistently demonstrates this skill.
3 – Student demonstrates this skill most of the time.
2 – Student demonstrates this skill some of the time.
1 – Student requires on-going support to develop and demonstrate this skill.Note from Mrs. Taylor!
Hi Families,
Enjoy the LABOR DAY weekend! We hope you get to spend this time with family & friends!
BIST TIP:
While using BIST, we have found that the language we use is important! Our language needs to be sincere, calm, honest, and caring. Example of adult language at school & home:
“I see you are having trouble following my directions.”
“Can you work on your homework, even though you don’t want to?”
When students do not respond to the BIST language, they may be showing us that they need more time to think. All classrooms have safe spots (including recess and lunch), where students can go if they have an overwhelming feeling. Examples of when a child may be asked to move to the safe seat include refusing to work, disrupting class, not following directions, when a 2nd re-direction is given, and unsafe behavior.
