Rainy Week Ahead!
As we enter the week, it looks like we will have several days of rain. Please remember to send your child with a warm coat and proper shoes as we will continue to have recess outside with a drizzle. Students will eat outdoors as much as possible (we have covered spaces). However, depending on how rainy, cold, and windy it is, we may have students eating and playing indoors. Below are the guidelines:
As a reminder, here are our Rainy Day COVID Guidelines (Recess and lunch indoors)
- Students will wear their masks and ONLY remove masks during eating and drinking.
A time limit of 13 minutes for eating will be set if eating indoors. Physical distancing as practicable. Students do not necessarily need to eat at their desks.
Older students are taught to replace their masks when not actively eating.
Students with allergies will be accommodated per current school protocols.
Covered areas outdoors with a table will be utilized if available.
Masks must remain on when having indoor recess after lunch.
Oster Traffic Concerns
Recently we have seen an increase in traffic problems during drop off and pick up. Parents and students are jaywalking in the middle of the block. Drivers are double parking. Cars are blocking residents' driveways, resulting in frustrated residents calling the office to complain. In addition to creating a dangerous situation and being a poor neighbor, each of these examples is also a violation of the California Vehicle Code.
We need your help to provide a safe environment for our students, staff, and community. Thank you, in advance, for being thoughtful, patient, and kind and following traffic laws as you drop off and pick up your children each day.
Oster Yearbook Contest Cover Winner!
Thank you to all our Oster students who submitted their cover art for the yearbook. There were so many wonderful designs, and it was tough to narrow it down to a winner.
Even if your art was not selected for one of the cover positions, all designs that met the submission criteria will be featured inside this year's yearbook.
USD Open Enrollment: 22/23 School Year
Intra-District Transfers
The Union School District Board of Trustees endorses a neighborhood school concept. The Board, however, recognizes that parents may wish to choose a school of attendance other than the assigned school. Therefore, the Board of Trustees believes that parental choice among the district’s public schools should be included as an integral feature of a well-rounded educational environment.
Home school attendance areas are established to optimize the use of existing facilities and to avoid crowded conditions. However, requests for Intra-District Transfers may be made for reasons of personal preference based on the needs of the family or child.
If you are interested in having your child attend a school within Union School District but outside of your home attendance area, you must complete an Intra-District Transfer Request Form found under the Family section of the USD website. Intradistrict Transfer Applications are open for submission on January 14, 2022. Please complete the online form by 4:30 p.m. on March 1, 2022. Intra-District Transfers will only be honored if space is available at the receiving school. Requests received after that time and date will be placed on a waiting list status. If there are more requests than openings at any particular school, a lottery selection process, as required by the Education Code, will take place.
Any approved intra-district transfer will be reviewed yearly to determine continued placement based on academic progress, behavior, attendance, and finally space at the site. Once an intra-district transfer is approved, you do not have to re-apply, and the transfer is in effect through 5th grade for elementary schools and 8th grade for middle schools, unless otherwise noted on the transfer. Union School District BP 5116.1
Inter-District Transfers
If you live outside of Union School District and are currently on an Inter-District Transfer to Union School District, our District Policy does not require you to reapply for the 2022-23 school year, however, your home district Policy may be different, so please check with your home district.
Based on our District Policy and the Inter-District Contract, your child’s academic progress, behavior and attendance will be reviewed. If all are acceptable you will be welcome to remain in the District as long as space is available. Space determinations are often not certain, however, until late in August and possibly as late as October 1.
If you are by choice returning to your home school, please let your site know as soon as possible. If any of the criteria above is not met, we will let you know in writing so that you can enroll your child in his/her home school. Union School District BP 5117
Rapid Antigen Test Kits for Winter Break
In working directly with the County Department of Public Health, Union School District has received enough rapid antigen test kits to send home with every student in the district for the winter holiday. The intention of the test kits is to provide a layer of safeguard for our students and staff before returning to school from the Winter Break.
With the test kits, families and staff will be asked to take a rapid antigen test on Sunday, January 2, or before school on Monday, January 3, 2022. Testing is not mandatory and is entirely optional. If a student tests positive, please keep your student home and contact the school. Otherwise, negative tests do not need to be reported to the office.
While test results are not required to return to school from Winter Break, we encourage all families to support us in keeping our schools safe. Test Kits will be sent home sometime later next week.
The TUPE-Tobacco Use and Prevention Team at the Santa Clara County Office of Education is focused on what parents need to know about vaping nicotine and cannabis products. This presentation will provide you with ways to help educate yourself and your child on the harmful effects of vaping nicotine and cannabis products. Please join us for an hour long presentation on January 11th from 6:00-7:00 pm. Register in advance for this meeting:
