Take Note
The second of Dr. Marzano's highly effective strategies are note taking and summarizing. With both strategies, students must process what they are learning while also filtering out the unnecessary details. Ultimately, this will help students take ownership of their learning and internalize it.
Points to consider when teaching note-taking:
1) Stick to a consistent note-taking method- some formats may work better in certain classes, but allow students opportunities to experience methods that will work best for them individually.
2) Give students teacher prepared notes to model good note taking- this helps students learn how to identify key points.
3) Work with students to review their notes- this allows students to make their notes more meaningful and useful.
The following is an example of two-column notes. Other popular formats are outlines, Cornell notes, webbing, and I charts.
When summarizing, ask students for parts they may not understand. Predictions are also an aspect of summarizing. One simple method for summarizing is asking students to identify the "5 Ws": who, what, when, where, why, and how. Summarizing can also be great to use as bell work or exit tickets.
