St Jerome's Newsletter
Week 4 - Term 1 (Thursday 4 March 2021)
Dear Parents
This week at our Wednesday Gathering, several teachers spoke about the power of the word, ‘Yet’! Mrs Crosby talked about how in her class the children were growing seeds and how these were not wheat ..yet…. nor were they turned into flour and then bread..yet! But given the right conditions, the seeds would grow into wheat and the wheat would turn into flour and the flour would turn into bread. The point the teachers were making was the importance of a positive mindset. Our children are learning that they need to persevere, to succeed. Success rarely comes without effort! Our children are learning to set personal goals, short term and long term and to develop the mindset that if they have not achieved their goal ..yet ..then they must continue until they do! It’s called the ‘Power of Yet’!
Last week our community raised $500 to send to the Bushfire Appeal. It was wonderful to see our students actively acknowledging such a worthwhile appeal by dressing up in fire crew costumes and others wearing yellow, red and orange clothes .Thank you to all those families who supported such a worthy cause!
Our Student Councillors have been doing an amazing job supporting teachers and our students, both before and after school. These children are taking their roles very seriously and we congratulate them for their commitment to our school.
Our P&F team have been working hard behind the scenes preparing for our Welcome Back Picnic tomorrow night. There will be over thirty stall holders attending. The number of ‘online tickets’ are rapidly selling out, so get in quick if you are planning to attend.
Our Student Councilors will be setting up special bins at the picnic to collect drink bottles and cans for the ‘Containers for Change’ program. All proceeds will go to Project Compassion.
God bless

This week’s story comes from Tanzania where twenty-two-year-old Oliva lives with her farmer husband, two young sons and an adopted niece and nephew.
Olivia didn’t have the opportunity to go to school growing up - and was embarrassed that she couldn’t read, write or count. Around 25 percent of Tanzanian girls and women over 15 years cannot read or write, with many families unable to afford school fees or uniforms.
Now, as an adult, Oliva runs a kiosk and works as a farm labourer - but her business was losing money because she couldn’t add up.
Then Oliva enrolled in Caritas Australia-supported literacy and numeracy classes. She also set up a classroom at home to teach her neighbours, for free, because they were too shy to attend larger classes.
Oliva has now graduated, as have some of her students. Attendance at her classes is growing, her kiosk is thriving and she can help her children with their homework. She aims to become a pastor and run for leadership in the next local election.
Oliva aspires to “Be More’ and wants to help her community to achieve its vision of a better life for all.

ARE YOU A YETI…YET?
Have you noticed the wave of change in your child’s language regarding their learning? There’s a small word that we are hearing around St Jerome’s and many of our staff and students are adding it onto the end of their sentences. It’s having a HUGE impact of their growth mindset. The word is…YET!
It is a fantastic addition to your everyday toolbox to raise positive, empowered children who see their ability and power to improve. Having this can-do attitude can make them unstoppable!
How are we using it at St Jerome’s?
In classrooms, students and their teachers are identifying the times that they use the word CAN’T and they simply add the word YET to the end of the sentence, and you can do it at home too.
“I can’t ride a bike…yet.”
“I can’t bake a cake…yet.”
“I can’t tap dance…yet.”
What does the word 'Yet' encourage? PERSERVERANCE 😊 It means that we remain patient and believe in our ability to learn.
