Bear Bulletin
WELCOME TO 2017-2018: BACK TO SCHOOL EDITION
Message from Dr. Kaminski
Welcome Back BSE!
I am thrilled to welcome all of our BSE Bears and families back to the 2017-2018 school year. This year is set to be an outstanding one. This newsletter is filled with details for the year, so please take a minute to read and review.
This year all elementary schools in HSE are committing to our HSE21 promise and will implement Lucy Calkins Reading and Writing Units. Please explore this research based model out of Columbia University. The teachers have been working all summer and are ready to launch readers and writers workshops starting week 1!
We are just as eager to get our new math manipulative and materials into students' hands. In order to deliver standards based instruction with relevant student approaches we are implementing Everyday Math out of the University of Chicago.
Both curricular models will ensure that our system has the "tight" components provided to ensure all children are meeting the standard, all while being immersed in an inquiry based experience that our teachers have mastered over the last few years.
I know that you are all eager to find out what your student(s) teacher assignments are for the year. Don't worry; after a great deal of work classes have been designed and teacher assignments will be viewable in Skyward on Friday, August 4th, after 3:00 PM.
Our staff is eager to meet you at the Ice Cream Social on Monday August 7th. More information is available below. REMEMBER, WE WILL NOT PRINT CLASS LISTS, SO PLEASE MAKE SURE TO VIEW YOUR STUDENT'S TEACHER ASSIGNMENT IN SKYWARD PRIOR TO THE EVENT. ALL Kindergarten families will find teacher assignments posted on Media Center windows upon arrival for Kinder Open House on 8/3/2017 at 6:00 PM.
Please note that our Bear Bulletin will go out every two weeks (delivered on Friday) via Skylert. All community information is available via the district community link at the bottom of the page.
We look forward to a great start to the new school year.

BSE Pilots Peanut/Tree Nut Allergy Friendly School Environment 2017-2018
Here at Brooks School Elementary, we make the safety and well-being of every student our top priority. That’s why we’re going to pilot a new program to reduce students’ exposure to peanuts and tree nuts.
During the 2017-18 school year, BSE is going to be a peanut and nut-friendly building. In order to do this, we need your help. We ask that you do not send your child to school with anything containing peanuts or other tree nuts, such as: almonds, pecans, walnuts, cashews, and pistachios. We will also not serve anything in our cafeteria made with peanuts or tree nuts.
Please remember if your child has a severe food allergy, it is imperative that you notify the school nurse. Also, if they require an Epi-pen, emergency medication orders must be signed by the child’s physician each school year.
Becoming a peanut and nut-friendly building is a collaborative effort. Students will not be punished if they bring in food containing nuts, so we cannot guarantee that children with allergies will not have accidental exposure.
This is a learning process for all of us, but we trust that you understand how important is to respect and adhere to these guidelines.

Fishers Campaign to Change Direction
Hamilton Southeastern School district recently entered in to a partnership with Community Health Network to begin to provide behavioral health services to students during the school day. Our school was recently assigned a Licensed Mental Health Counselor who will be in our building approximately 2 ½ days a week to meet with students and their families. If you are interested in this service please reach out to your child’s guidance counselor to learn more.
The goal of the Campaign to Change Direction is to change the culture of mental health in America so that all of those in need receive the care and support they deserve. The Campaign encourages all Americans to pay attention to their emotional well-being – and it reminds us that our emotional well-being is just as important as our physical well-being. In order to change our culture, we have to start with a common language, and learn the Five Signs.
Please take a minute and click here to learn more about the five signs, and click here for a list of events that will occur the first week of school.
