Crow Island Parent Newsletter

November 7, 2022

Dear Crow Island Families,

Last week was a wonderful reminder of the community that makes Crow Island so special as Halloween leaves a lasting impression on the minds of our students. Many thanks to our PTO room parents, classroom photographers, and 4th grade parent volunteers for helping to celebrate Halloween!

As a reminder, students will not attend school tomorrow as it is Election Day. We look forward to seeing you back in classrooms on Wednesday morning!

Elementary Math Core Values in Winnetka D36

Over the summer a team of elementary teachers, math specialists, and math facilitators collaborated across the district to articulate the K-4 Math Core Values. Below are the five core values. Each month starting in December a core value will be featured in both principal newsletters and teacher newsletters.

Core Values of Elementary Math in Winnetka

Everyone can do math. Each child comes into the classroom with their own abilities and strengths as well as areas to grow and explore. Our goal is to meet each student where they are, build on, and deepen their understanding. Instruction is differentiated to each student’s individual needs. Math is creative and an integral part of the world around us.

Elementary Math Instruction in Winnetka…

  • Emphasizes active, hands-on learning.

  • Values perseverance and making mistakes.

  • Promotes flexible thinking, student agency, and creativity.

  • Focuses on deep conceptual understanding.

  • Cultivates communication, collaboration, and community.
