Edgewood's Tiger Talk
December 14, 2018
Notes from the Principal
1) The Milwaukee County Zoo is free from December 24th and January 1st. If you want to avoid parking fees ($12), park on Bluemound Road. I love the ape house and great cat house--super cool animals AND they're indoors!
2) Ice Skate at Red Arrow Park. This is an outdoor free rink in the midst of downtown. Kids are amazed at the tall buildings. Rentals are available, and there's a Starbucks adjacent to warm up or grab a hot chocolate treat. https://www.travelwisconsin.com/natural-attractions-and-parks/ice-skating-at-red-arrow-park-204714
3) Visit the downtown library. The Milwaukee Central Public Library is an amazing, beautiful building, and the children's section is huge and amazing. They have great events for kids every Saturday, too! http://www.mpl.org/hours_locations/central.php
Articles on the negative effects of screen time are popping up all over the place.See the image below for a summary of interesting research. This winter break, get out and enjoy some fun!
Cold Weather is Here!
If students do not have snow pants, snow boots, or snow mittens, they MUST stay on the blacktop by the building where it's cleared.
Please label coats, hats, and gloves with a sharpie on the tag, and if you're missing something, encourage your child to check the lost and found if something is missing.
If you need assistance getting a hat, coat, or snow gear for your child, please let Mrs. Boyd or Mrs. Michlig know.

Artsy Corner with Ms. Nolan
In a few art classes we are ending our exploration of Native American art.
5th Grade learned about Buffalo hides and designed faux (fake) hide with Native American designs. They learned about emphasis and unity in art and how artists achieve this by size, placement and color of images. Some students even created interesting stories on the hide.
4th Grade are completing making Native American medicine bags. We used felt and learned to stick with yarn. It was a challenge at times but a great learning experience. Families, if you have a needle, fabric and thread this would be a good to continue using these skills.
3rd Grade has designed some colorful Kachina Doll shields and learned about the meaning behind the dolls.
Grades K-2 are exploring winter themes through art. Look for pieces coming home!

EHSA Update
Plans are underway for our “Edgewood Family Fun Night,” Friday, February 8th. We are hoping to provide Edgewood families with a casual, fun night out at the school. Some ideas presented at our December meeting was a movie night, game room, snack concessions, and other fun activities for the whole family. We will continue to plan at our January meeting. Keep an eye out for fliers in the new year!
EHSA will be utilizing the Edgewood Facebook page to create events for our school. I know Mrs. Boyd posts pictures and school updates regularly, but we hope to reach more families that might not see our emails/tiger talk updates/volunteer sign-ups. If you don’t already follow “Edgewood Elementary School,” look it up!
At our December EHSA Meeting, Mrs. Boyd shared some of the behind the scenes workings of our school. Edgewood teachers (by grade level) participate in a “Data Day” 3 times a year. This is a half day meeting where teachers can assess student learning and make goals to reach specific groups of children. Sometimes it is the group of kids that are just starting to understand the subject matter. Other times, it’s students that are just starting to show understanding, or the students who have mastered the skills taught. They are then able to make plans to provide quality learning for each child.
4th Grade also came to visit. Mrs. Stark talked about the new science standards they are teaching from. The students learned about National Weather/Earth Disasters and will be starting their energy unit. Something that is especially interesting in 4th grade is that the topics discussed in science and social studies are also reinforced in their writing and reading curriculum. This fall, the students in 4th grade visited the WI Capitol Building and the Wisconsin Historical Museum to jump start their social studies units. They also made use of our green screen in the Learning Commons for video presentations.
Mrs. Haut’s Classroom was the winner of our kringle and coffee fundraiser. They had the top sales in BOTH fundraisers, and enjoyed a Kringle and Hot Cocoa party last Friday. Way to go K4!
Santa’s Breakfast and Workshop was a great success. Thank you to our parent and middle school volunteers that helped with the event. The kids enjoyed shopping for their loved ones in the workshop area.
Lastly- Congratulations to Mrs. Hess! 3rd grade presented at our November EHSA meeting, sharing details about their Monarch butterfly unit. The students learned about migration, planted milkweed to provide habitats for the butterflies at our school, and also participated in a symbolic migration by sending letters to Mexico and now waiting for a return letter from Mexico. This was not only part of the 3rd grade curriculum, but also part of a grant Mrs. Hess applied for. She is also one of two educators that won the a grant! She will get to go to Mexico to participate in person in some of the monarch butterfly experiences they have been learning about.
We hope to see you at our next EHSA Meeting, Tuesday, January 8th 6:30-7:30 PM in the learning commons. 2nd grade will be presenting.
