Message from your Proud Principal
In 1947, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. wrote, “The function of education…is to teach one to think intensively and to think critically.” However, he went on to explain that educating the mind isn’t enough. He added, “Intelligence plus character – that is the goal of true education.”
Although Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s thoughts on education are nearly seventy years old, they still are very much relevant to the mission of Parsons Elementary School. Our drive is to ensure our students are enabled to read, write, think critically and be good citizens. We desire that all our students receive the knowledge and skills to be successful and productive members of our community and an integral part of our global society.
I truly believe that our community’s greatest asset is found within its children and its core values. I am dedicated to continuing the great tradition that has been established at Parsons by providing an outstanding learning environment for our students, treating each student as an individual, and promoting positive relationships throughout the school.
Enjoy your day celebrating and honoring Dr. King's legacy. We can't wait to see our kiddos back on Tuesday, January 18, 2022.
Proud Principal,
Laura Clark
Be prepared for Snow and Digital Learning
If you turn to any local news channel you hear about the POSSIBILITY of snow heading our way Sunday and Monday. If the predictions are correct and the white stuff makes it unsafe for us to attend school on Tuesday, we want to make sure we are all prepared. Now that our students are so proficient digitally, we no longer have to make up days missed due to inclement weather. Instead, our kiddos will log on to their teacher's eClass page and complete asynchronous assignments. We have asked teachers to post assignments by 9:00am. Students can log on anytime throughout the day (in between snow play). If you have any difficulty, reach out to your child's teacher via email and he/she will respond. As important as it is to complete digital assignments, it is also important to get out and have some fun. Some of my most favorite memories are playing in the snow as a little girl and also as a mom.
Below is information from the district's website about inclement weather:
- GCPS schools and facilities may close in the event of hazardous weather or other emergencies which present threats to the safety of students, staff, or school property.
- It is more likely for school to be cancelled in the early morning — due to dangerous road conditions that formed overnight — than for school to let out early because bad weather is moving in.
- GCPS TV can be found on the following Gwinnett County cable channels: Charter - Channel 180, Comcast - Channel 24 or 26 (depending on location)
- Visit us on our GCPS TV app on Apple, Android, Amazon Fire and Roku devices or view the live stream at GCPSTV.org
Should severe weather move into the area during the day, plans to cancel classes will be announced on metro-Atlanta radio and TV stations and on the school system's web site before school is dismissed.
The key factor in all decisions about whether or not to hold school is the safety of students and staff.
- If bad weather causes school to be cancelled or dismissed early, public announcements will be made on GCPS TV, on the school system’s website (www.gcpsk12.org), on Twitter and Facebook, through SchoolMessenger calls and optional texts, and via metro-Atlanta radio and television stations. Full-day cancellations usually are announced by 6 a.m.
- The superintendent makes the decision about school closing based on a cross-divisional and cross-agency effort, with information from public safety officials, the Georgia Emergency Management Agency, Gwinnett County officials, and the state Department of Transportation. In addition, when inclement weather is an issue, members of the GCPS Facilities and Operations team head out as early as 3:30 or 4 a.m. to drive roads around the county and assess road conditions. The school system’s Transportation staff ensures that buses are operable. (Extreme cold can cause operational problems for diesel buses.) Facilities are checked in the early hours, and GCPS works with power providers, as needed. Local school principals gather information for the leadership team about specific school conditions.

Girls on the Run
Girls on the Run is so much more than running. Their tested curriculum blends physical activity with skill development that enables girls to adapt to whatever comes their way. Girls on the Run understands the important connection between physical activity and overall emotional health. Trained volunteers guide girls through research-based lessons which creatively integrate movement in a fun and motivating way. By signing your daughter up for Girls on the Run, you are giving her the opportunity to connect, grow and learn how to navigate difficult situations.
The spring season registration lottery is open through Tuesday, January 25: https://www.girlsontherunatlanta.org/Program-Registration.
Our team is meeting in-person this season. Our meeting days and times are: Monday and Wednesday, 4:00-5:30 beginning the week of February 14. Girls will be dismissed from their classroom at 3:40 for snack and then practice will begin at 4:00. The program is for girls in 3rd through 5th grades. Girls on the Run 5K will be held on May 7. The location is to be determined.
Girls on the Run uses an income-based sliding scale so that every girl who wants to participate can. The program registration fee is available on a sliding scale from $10 to $185.

- Staff Goody Day ~ 2nd Grade Parents send in snacks for staff
Chick-Fil-A Spirit Day is Thursday, January 20, 2022. This will be all day (dine-in or take out) at the Chick-Fil-A located at 2020 Satellite Blvd, Duluth, GA 30097. Mention Parsons Elementary while ordering, and a portion of the day's proceeds will benefit the Parsons PTA.
Friday, January 21 is Staff Goody Day. 2nd grade families are asked to please send in individually wrapped snacks, granola bars, chips, treats, fruit, or beverages. Please label any items containing nuts. The PTA will collect these items in the car ride lane and bus rider doors in the morning. Then your PTA parents will put the items in the staff lounge for a nice treat for all teachers and staff to enjoy!
All Pro Dads is seeking a male guardian to lead the amazing program beginning Fall 2022. From current All Pro Dads Team Captain Josh Holt:
I have had the honor of being the All Pro Dads Team Captain at Parsons ES for the past 6 years. Those Friday morning breakfasts/gatherings with my boys and many of your families have been the highlight of my time at Parsons. Being that my youngest son will be heading to middle school next year, I would love to “pass the torch” to an All Pro Dad (or two) to continue this great program at Parsons ES. Please feel free to reach out to me at 678-687-0195 or holtdaddy2@yahoo.com if you are interested and/or have any questions.
