Grading Policies
Grades in this class will be based on the following:
10% - Learning Work: includes daily work, quizzes, journals, in-class activities, and homework
90% - Final Assessments: includes final projects, tests, and papers
* Learning Work is considered part of the learning process for students and allows me to gauge the next steps to take in the classroom. It helps prepare students for the Final Assessments, which will be the final measure of what the student has learned after engaging in the learning process. Though the daily work and quizzes make up a smaller portion of the grade, this does not mean they are any less important. In order to succeed and do well on final assessments, students need to complete the daily work and participate in class activities. Learning work is also an opportunity for students to get individualized feedback from me on their progress.
Late/Incomplete Work Policies
Late work: All late work for a unit must be turned in by the end of the next consecutive unit of study. Late work will be accepted without grade deduction, but it is strongly discouraged and will be noted in the grade book. Late work will also only be graded when time allows – if students want their work graded in a timely manner, then it is their responsibility to turn it in by the due date. Completing work on time will lead to better success in the class as there will be more opportunity for feedback and revision. Assignments in this class are meant to build off of each other and not turning in work on time can result in falling behind rather quickly.
Missing work: If a student does not turn in an assignment by the due date, they will be given an “M” in the grade book. This will calculate the assignment as a zero until it is turned in. When the assignment is turned in, students will receive the grade they earned. If the student fails to turn in the assignment by the end of the unit, they will receive an incomplete. Students with incomplete grades for Final Assessments at the end of the semester will receive an incomplete as a final grade.. If a student has not completed an assessment, then I cannot provide an accurate measurement of their learning.
Incomplete work: If a student turns in work that is not up to minimum standards, their work will be handed back for required revisions before a grade is entered into the grade book. While the student is revising, an “I” (incomplete) will be entered into
the grade book until work is completed adequately.
Re-taking/Revising Final Assessments
If students do not do well on a final assessment, they may choose to re-take or revise it. Students will need to have completed teacher-assigned learning work before being allowed to re-take the assessment. Re-takes will cover the same content, but may be in a different format. Re-takes must be completed by the end of the next consecutive unit of study. It is the student’s responsibility to initiate a re-take. They must do this by meeting with me before or after school to discuss the process and requirements for doing so.
Absent and Make-up Work
Students are expected to make up any missed work from an absence. Upon their return, it is their responsibility to ask me for their missed work. According to school policy, students will have two days to make up their missed work. If the student has been absent for longer than a day or two, I will set up a timeline with the student for completing the work. If students know about an absence beforehand, they should inform me so that I can plan make-up work. If a student misses a quiz or test, they will have one week after their return to take it before or after school.
Behavior Expectations
Students are expected to conduct themselves in an appropriate manner and follow all district rules. In addition, in this class students are expected to follow the team guidelines of:
RESPECT, RESPONSIBLE, READY
If all students can do their part to follow class expectations, together we can create a healthy and happy classroom environment to learn in.When behavior expectations are not met the following consequences will be applied:
Warning
Hallway conference with Mrs. Hollnagel
Detention (20 minutes before or after school), behavior plan & phone call/email to parents
Referral sent to office
Parent conference and review of behavior plan
*Students are expected to be on their best behavior when there is a substitute teacher. Any student causing problems (as determined by the substitute) will have an automatic 20 minutes of detention with Mrs. Hollnagel. They may also be required to write a letter of apology to the substitute.
