How many soldiers were in the north? And how many died?
About 1 million soldiers served for the south and approximately 500,000 soldiers died from combat, accident, starvation, and disease during the civil war.
What the north carried and wore.
The unions uniform were dark blue and made of thick wool, soldiers carried a heavy knapsack, a blanket, and a small protective cover called " dog tent ".
What the south carried and wore
Confederate uniforms were gray kepi, jacket and trousers. As these weathered and faded, they took on a light brownish appearance, which gave rise to the nickname "Butternuts" for Southern armies . They carried a small rolled-up blanket, a haversack, a cloth-covered canteen, a tin cup, and a small frying pan.
Life in camps.
Only a tiny fraction of any soldier’s time was spent in front line combat. Soldiers had to deal with much boredom, most of them wrote either letters to loved ones, drank, gambled, or played sports. The longer armies stayed at camp, the more the sanitary conditions worsened.
