Shop With a Hero! (SPS R-12/Care to Learn)
The elementary division of Springfield Public Schools is excited to continue the collaborative opportunity with Care to Learn. Care to Learn, in partnership with Walmart, are providing funds for emergent needs of students in the areas of health, hunger, and hygiene while providing a unique opportunity for selected students to be engaged with a caring school district “hero” employee. This event has been a great success for four years for the selected kiddos & staff, prompting Walmart to commit again to it this year. The information below will describe the process for this event.
The elementary sites will identify students in the district with needs related to Care to Learn’s purpose of providing for health, hunger and hygiene. Each site will have to opportunity to identify and select three (3) students. These students should reflect the diversity of the district’s student population and be half male and half female. Students do not have to qualify or be enrolled for free and/or reduced meal program or attend Title I schools, but should be identified as underserved/under-resourced for reasons beyond the student’s control.
Each student will be partnered with a caring district professional (Hero) who will take them shopping at the Walmart store assigned to them. Each student, accompanied the student’s parent(s) and their Hero, will be given $100 to spend on the student’s personal needs. Suggested example items might include: shampoo, conditioner, hairbrush/comb, dental care items, coats, hat, gloves, shoes, socks, jeans, shirts, nutritional food, vitamins, etc. Items not appropriate would include: alcohol, tobacco, candy, or toys. At the request of Walmart, a universal shopping date and time has been set. This event will take place Saturday, Feb 6th at 9am (The early time will allow shopping when Walmart is not packed by its usual heavy midday and afternoon volume).
Want to be a Hero? Please let Liz know if you would like to be a "Hero" by Friday, Jan. 22.
Know someone who needs a hero? Please let Liz know if you have a student in mind you would like to be considered for this event by Friday, Jan. 22
