Jeans Day for STREAM CAMP
Next Friday February 17th has been approved by Dr. Ailshie as the first JEANS for STREAM Day. Any staff member in your building is allowed to wear JEANS to work if they make a $5.00 donation to summer STREAM camp. Money raised from this day helps fund scholarships for underprivileged students in our district to attend the camp free of charge. Please encourage your staff members to consider helping with this worthy cause. I will be sending a reminder to you early next week as well as specifics for how the money needs to be collected at the building level.

Inaugural Tennessee STEAM Festival Planning
On October 12-22, Tennessee will holds its inaugural Tennessee STEAM Festival in a state-wide event based on the celebration of Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math. This is not a one location event...we are invited to sponsor STEAM events in our schools and community. It is suggested that these would be a perfect fit for libraries. The planners of this state-wide event are looking to fill a calendar of events including symposiums, educator/expert talks, lunch and learns, community/family events, entertainment events, etc. for all ages. Other festivals like the Philadelphia Science Festival and North Carolina Science Festival serve as inspiration for what the TN STEAM Festival can be.
Submit your STEAM event by April 3rd and be included in the state wide promotion of the Tennessee STEAM Festival in October. By participating, you will also receive promotional materials to use in marketing your event. Contact Becca Baker at the Blount County Public Library if you have questions.
Library of Congress 2017 Summer Teacher Institute - The Library of Congress is now accepting applications for its week-long summer institutes for K-12 educators. Click here for more information. Applications are due on March 17 and require a letter of recommendation. The institute and course materials are provided at no cost to participants, but participants will be responsible for travel expenses and hotel accommodations.
Tennessee Educator Fellowship Nominations Now Open
Tennessee has seen and sustained historic gains in recent years in terms of student achievement. According to the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP), these gains have made Tennessee the fastest-improving state in the country. The Tennessee Educator Fellowship provides an opportunity for a clear and consistent voice from those in the classroom. Fellows learn, share, and provide a voice for classroom teachers across the state as well as serve as advocates in their own regions.
The application for the 2017-18 Tennessee Educator Fellowship is now open. As the fellowship enters its fourth year, SCORE will select approximately 50 teachers, librarians, and guidance counselors who are interested in elevating their voices in support of teachers and students. Applicants must have at least three years teaching experience in a Tennessee public school, and each selected teacher will receive a $5,000 stipend for their work.
Recognizing your dedication to teacher leadership, please share this opportunity with teachers in your network. If you currently are a teacher, librarian, or guidance counselor, please apply. Applications are due by 11:59 p.m. CT on Friday, March 3, 2017. Please visit SCORE's website to learn more about the fellowship, the responsibilities of fellows, or to apply. Let SCORE’s Tennessee Educator Fellowship Coordinator, Peter Tang, or John Hutchins know if you have any questions.
Innovative Educators of Kingsport City Schools - Are you passionate about education? Do you enjoy learning about and implementing new strategies? Would you like to create a more student-centered learning environment? Then consider joining the Innovative Educators of Kingsport City School, a network of K-12 teachers from across the district to come together for a day of training, go back and implement new practices, then meet up monthly to celebrate and troubleshoot. Click here for more information.

John Sevier Language Arts teachers, Nancy Weaver, Norie-Anne Young, and Megan Roop have each been awarded a placement to participate in the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum’s Arthur and Rochelle Belfer Conference for Educators.
At the conference, Museum educators and scholars share rationales, strategies, and approaches for teaching about the Holocaust. Participants have the opportunity to tour the Museum’s Permanent Exhibition, as well as the special exhibitions Remember the Children: Daniel's Story and Some Were Neighbors: Collaboration & Complicity in the Holocaust, and to explore the Museum’s full range of resources. Those who complete the conference receive a set of educational materials from the Museum.
In addition to the acceptance of the conference, Weaver, Young and Roop were also awarded scholarships. The Levine Institute for Holocaust Education at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum selected each teacher, on their own merits, to receive a $1,000 scholarship to attend the Arthur and Rochelle Belfer Conference: English/Language Arts, at the USHMM from July 19-21, 2017.
