It's CCRPI Time! 92.1!!
2019-2020: Reaching New Heights
Our Mission: Arbor Springs Committed to Student Success.
From Dr. Durrance
Happy November! Our 2018-2019 CCRPI was just released, and we are excited to announce that we received a rating of 92.1! This rating is a combination of achievement data, student progress, closing achievement gaps, readiness for college and career, and school climate. I'll break that down for you! Achievement data is called "content mastery," and it's simply the students' weighted scores from 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade on the Georgia Milestones in ELA and math, and the 5th grade scores in science and social studies. Students can score at levels 1-4, with no points given to the school for level 1, .5 points for each student scoring level 2, 1 point for students scoring level 3, and 1.5 points for students scoring level 4. Our weighted content mastery was 88.2 Our goal for improvement is to increase the numbers of students scoring in levels 3 and 4 in order for our overall content mastery score to go up.
Student progress measures each student's growth percentile, or SGP for students in grades 4 and 5. Each student is compared to a similar peer from the previous academic peer, and the growth of each student is measured. Students who grow more in a year receive a higher SGP than those who did not. These scores are also weighted, with the most credit awarded to schools with students who grow the most. Our progress score 95.1, meaning that our students grew quite a bit compared to other students across the state. We can increase that score by increasing the growth of all students, whether they are higher achieving or lower achieving.
The closing gaps score reports how much progress specific subgroups are making in relation to all students. We must have a minimum of 15 students in grades 3-5 in order to have a subgroup score for that group. Our current subgroups include all students, white students, black students, students with disabilities, and economically disadvantaged students. Each subgroup has a specific target based on desired growth from a previous score. Our closing gaps score for 2018-2019 was 96.9, a growth of over 29 points from the prior year! This score is also weighted, with more credit for green flags with stars (representing 6% growth) and green flags. We had red flags for black and economically disadvantaged students in math, and a yellow flag (representing improvement but not enough to meet the target) for students with disabilities, also in math. We will continue to work hard to close achievement gaps and have a specific school improvement goal in the area of math for all students.
Readiness measures how well our students are prepared for life beyond school. Student attendance, literacy, and participation in fine arts/language are the three elements of this score. Arbor Springs received and 89.2 on this indicator, with growth in literacy and improvement in student attendance. Our literacy score is based on the percentage of students at a grade specific Lexile, based on their Milestones results. We will continue to push the 30 book challenge and encourage you to read to and with your students at school, as well.
Our school climate remains exceptional, as it has been for many years. This score represents a combination of survey data from students, staff, and parents; school-wide attendance; discipline data; and fidelity in PBIS (Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports). Our score was 99.4.
We are very proud of our high achievement and steady growth! Please join me in congratulating our staff for their hard work and dedication to improvement. Feel free to stop by and ask if you have questions. You can see our score and scores from across the state by visiting the GaDoe website.

Swimming in a School of Character:
The character word for the month of October was self-control. Self- control is the ability to make yourself what should be done.Teaching children self-control and awareness is one of the most important character traits we can teach.
To help your child develop self-control:
Help them to set a realistic goal, make a plan to achieve it and stick to it.
Create a reward that they are working toward to develop persistence.
Deal with emotions that interrupt such as anger, envy and a lack of confidence.
Help your child break big tasks into small tasks that can be accomplished one at a time.
(Self Control Skills for Children‖ by Louise Eckman)
Bullying Prevention Month
October was National Bullying Prevention Month. National Bullying Prevention Month is a campaign in the United States founded in 2006 by PACER's National Bullying Prevention Center. The campaign is held during the month of October and unites communities nationwide to educate and raise awareness of bullying prevention. The goal is to encourage communities to work together to stop bullying and cyberbullying by increasing awareness of the prevalence and impact of bullying on all children of all ages. Fourth and fifth grade students learned about the effects of peer pressure and ways to stand up to peer pressure!
