Martian Chronicles

When the Earth Men came to Mars, they struggled due to little air to breathe. Several men fainted, and some were even sent back home to Earth.

When the settlers went to America, they acquired many diseases from the new environment.

"Jamestown was surrounded by marshes full of disease-carrying mosquitoes. By the time winter arrived, two-thirds of the original colonist had died."

"In 1609 some 400 more settlers arrived in Jamestown. That winter, disease and famine once again hit the colony. The colonist called this period the starving time."

In Martian Chronicles, there was a rebellious act made by William Stendahl. He broke the laws and used imagination.

" 'I'd have come sooner, but we Moral Climate wanted to be sure of yoyr intentions before we move on. We can have the Dismantlers and Burning Crew here by supper. By midnight your place will be razed to the cellar. Mr.Stendahl, I consider you somewhat of a fool, sir. Spending hard-earned money on a folly. Why, it must have cost you three million dollars--------' "

In Jamestown, Nathaniel Bacon created a rebellion against government policies.

"When the governor tried to stop him, Bacon and his followers attacked and buried Jamestown in an uprising know as Bacon's Rebellion."

When the second expedition landed, the native Martians mistook the crew as insane Martian that created hallucinations of rockets of crew members.

At first, the settlers got along well with the Natives. However, they later tried to kill the tribe leader and broke there relation which eventually led to war.

"The hardships continued for the colonists and the cultural clashes with the Indians increased. De La Warr’s troops raided Indian villages. In 1614, a peace agreement ended the First Anglo-Powhatan War."

In the book, the Earth Men settlers who went to Mars went willingly. They volunteered to go.

Jamestown wasn't made because the King of England asked for it. It was requested by English merchants.

In Martian Chronicles, many went to Mars to seek for freedom that they could not have on Earth.

"I cant figure out why they left now. With things lookin' up. I mean, everyday they got more rights. What they want, anyway? Here's the poll tax gone, and more and ore states passin' anti-lynchin bills, and all kinds of equal rights. What more they want? They make almost as good as money as a white man, but there they go."

When the settlers went to America, they sought religious freedom.

"As Jamestown was developing in Virginia, ​new groups of colonists began planning their ​move to America. Many English Catholics ​came to America to escape religious persecution. English Catholics had long been against ​England’s separation from the Roman Catholic Church. For this reason they were not ​allowed by the Church of England to worship ​freely. English leaders also feared that English ​Catholics would ally with Catholic countries ​such as France and Spain in conflicts."
