Week of February 3, 2014
101st day of school celebration
THURSDAY February 6, 2014! Come dressed like you are 101 years old! :) (completely optional, of course!)
Sight Word Review Week
This week for homework we will be reviewing all of the sight words from the 2nd nine weeks. We've already been tested on them but we just want to make sure they are internalized. There are 48 words, which I know is completely overwhelming. Today I gave the kids a pre-test (without any help from the word wall) to see which ones they already know and which ones they need to study this week. I'm attaching their pre-test to their homework. For their homework, focus on the ones that they missed. Of course it would be a good idea to review the other ones, just to make sure, but you can do the homework activities each day with the words they missed on their pre-test. All 48 words are already up on SpellingCity.com if you search for a list and type in mccaskm for the username. Let me know if you need any help getting there! Knowing these sight words are so important and it will really help prepare them as they move into 2nd grade! :)
Sugar Gliders
If you are interested in taking the Sugar Gliders home for a weekend this semester, you can now sign up on VSP!!! See link below. We have put the sign up on each Friday of the week. So, take a look at your schedule and see if you would like the cute little marsupials for the weekend! :) If you sign up, just coordinate a time with me on Friday when you would like to pick them up!
Penguin Projects
All of the penguin research projects turned out so cute! Thank you for all of the time and effort you put into these projects with your child. We will keep them at school this week as we continue to compare and contrast the different penguins and then we will send them back home on Friday!
Classroom Items:
If you are at the store this week and would like to pick up a package of valentine M&M's for the class that would be wonderful! :)
Also still need some ziploc baggies :)

Valentine's Boxes
You should have received a letter explaining our classroom Valentine's box decorating contest today with your homework. Next week that will be your homework assignment, but I wanted to let you get a head start if you would like to this week! We will be passing out all kinds of silly awards for the valentine boxes. Make sure you leave an opening for the kids to drop their Valentines in. Please do me a favor and make sure the box size of the box is within reason- the kids should be able to carry it easily on their own. :) Cereal boxes and shoe boxes are perfect! These are due Thursday February 13th.
Valentines
If you are planning on passing out valentines to the class, we have 24 kids! It is of course optional, and handmade valentines are really fun too! :) You should have received a list with all of the kids names in your Friday folder last week. If not, please let me know and I'm happy to share!
Weather Forecasting
We are excited to be concluding our unit on weather by producing a group news report on Weather. Each group has a lead anchorman, two meterologists and 4 experts on a weather topic of their choice. Next week we will be scheduled in the broadcast studio to record our forecast. I will let you know the exact date once Mrs. Kennemer gets back from Austin. On the day of recording, the kids can bring in any props they would like to use to go with their part. We will discuss this more in class, but I just wanted to give you a heads up! As soon as the videos are complete I will be sure to share them with you! :)
