April 2018

Spring is in Full Swing

While there were some points in the month that it seemed spring would never arrive, it appears as if the snow has finally ceased. As we enter into our final push toward the end of the school year, we look forward to a fun and engaging couple of months.

Students' last day of school will be Friday, June 22, 2018. Thus far, we have had 11 school closures. Our successful Blizzard Bag day removes one of these days, and we will makeup seven school days. Assuming no further closures, students will complete 177 school days on Friday, June 22, 2018. NH school districts are not beholden to a specific number of school days. However, students are required to attend school for a minimum number of hours. Calculating hours based on 177 school days, all MVSD schools safely exceed this hours-based requirement by a comfortable margin.

Let's keep our fingers crossed we are finally done with cancellations for the year!

Unified Sports

MVMS is very excited for the introduction of Unified Sports to our school community. Unified Sports is an inclusive program which combines individuals with intellectual disabilities (athletes) and individuals without intellectual disabilities (partners) on sports teams for training and competition. Athletes and partners compete alongside one another, each in a meaningful and integral role on the Unified Sports team. Unified Sports creates unique teammate bonds through sports experiences just like any other sports team. These experiences create a culture of inclusion and foster understanding in schools and communities. Participation in Unified Sports leads to new friendships, improved self‑esteem, and positive changes in attitude, behavior, and performance for all students involved. The program creates a lasting impact on all those participating and is a great addition to any education environment.

Members and coaches from our newly formed program recently participated in multi-school spring season kick-off party in Gilford. This was a fantastic opportunity for the players to get to know some of the surrounding teams and athletes in a fun and exciting atmosphere. The coaches and athletes had a memorable time and returned excited about the opportunities Unified Sports will bring to our school!

This May, the unified soccer team will take the field under the guidance of their coaches, Kate Wilson, Richard Rathbone, and Meghan Stack. We are very excited to announce that on Wednesday, May 30th @ 12:30, we will be hosting Gilford in the MVMS school gymnasium. We hope that students and staff will attend to support our newest MVMS sports team!
