Tools to Engage Students In & Out of Class
FORMATIVE ASSESSMENT OVERVIEW
Here are some helpful tips about formative assessment:
- Goal is to monitor student learning
- Help students identify their strengths and weaknesses and target areas that need work
- Help teachers recognize where students are struggling and address problems
- Low Stakes- little or no point value
QUESTIONS TO CONSIDER
- What is it that I am assessing?
- What information do I need to gain from this assessment (concrete or informal)?
- How will I use this assessment for future references or reflections?
- What tool can be used with my lesson to provide me with the information I need?
CLASSKICK
Features:

- Teacher can moderate all student work
- Easy sharing for multiple classes
- Simple feedback for teacher

GoSoapBox
- Web 2.0 tool accessible on any device
- Free teacher sign up (this allows for up to 30 students in one class at a time)
- Students use code to sign in
- Allows real time discussion
- Allows students to "check-in" and say whether or not they are getting the topic
- Has a social Q&A where students can ask questions and vote for those they would like answered most
- Can create polls
- Can create quizzes that give students automatic feedback and allows for exporting of results
- Students remain anonymous to other students during interactions

BLENDSPACE
- Free Account set up
- Students can join with classcode
- Teachers and students can create an entire interactive lesson
- Can add videos, Educreations, Google drive documents, Dropbox documents, Google searched websites, embed websites, favorited bookmarks, text, or multiple choice quizzes
- Can share through Edmodo with the free Blendspace app in Edmodo
- Share a link, embed onto a website, or use generated QR Code
- Students and teachers can create their own blendspace and add collaborators/co-authors (can edit at same time)
- Gallery of Blendspaces that others have made that can be copied and edited
KAHOOT
Features:
- Fun and competitive way to assess students
- Web-based
- Free account set-up
- Teachers and students can set up an account
- Keeps students engaged, gives automatic feedback, and provides data for teachers
GOOGLE FORMS
Features:
- Free account set-up (for Midway it's our school account)
- Sign-in to Google Drive to access Forms
- Web-based (iPad friendly)
- Can access google forms on smart device to make one by going to forms.google.com
- Create assessments using forms, polls, or quizzes through Google Forms
- One specific add on will allow for automatic grading giving teachers easy access to data collection
- Allows students to take assessment anytime/anywhere and can give real input without bias

QUIZIZZ
- Web 2.0 tool that allows for a competitive and fun way to assess what students have learned.
- iPad friendly
- Format similar to Kahoot.
- Can add images only to questions
- Students race against others to get the correct answer the fastest.
- Students join with a code no sign up.
- The answers and questions show on student's screen with a countdown of time and points at the top of their screen.
- When students answer (correctly or incorrectly) a funny picture will tell them if it was correct or not.
- at the end of the quiz students can see there final results on both the teacher and individual screens.
EDpuzzle
- Video tool that allows teacher to upload a video from multiple resources, crop video, embed voice over, voice prompts, and quiz questions to the video to share.
- Free teacher and student account set up
- Website for teacher set up
- Share class code for students to join
- Easy collection of data to see all students or individuals
- Allows reset of grades for students to take again if needed
- Students can access through web or app
- Allows students to have access multiple times
Rubistar
- Free online rubrics creator
- No sign up required, but to save rubrics you have to create a free account
- Can make rubrics temporary or permanent
- Can download, print, or make available online.
