A Message from the Administration
Parent Conference Time
by John Terko, Allen Brook School Principal
Welcome back everyone. I hope you had a wonderful winter break. Maybe you had a chance to travel, ski or just spend time at home. I had a chance to get away to warmer climates and really enjoyed the chance to recharge my batteries. Thank you all for your support on the school budget last week. Your support allows us to continue to offer the best education for the children of Williston.
Next week is the last of our Parent Conferences for this school year. Teachers and parents are working to get these conferences scheduled at mutually agreeable times. Additionally, next Friday, March 23, is the day set aside in the school calendar for conferences and many will take place on this day. A reminder that there is no school on that day. These conferences have always been well attended as this is a chance to see how your student has progressed thus far. Please be sure to ask questions and feel free to ask, “How can we help as parents?”. Student success is based on solid teaching and parent support throughout their schooling years. It’s true, it takes a village to raise a child. If you have not signed up for a conference, please do so as soon as possible.
Just before the February break Allen Brook School took part in the Red Clover Book Read. These are the top new children’s books coming out for this year. Denise Wentz, our librarian, organized this two week event for all K-2 students. It gave us an opportunity to co-mingle classes and grades as we continue to create mixed groups across houses. Teachers, para’s, and TA’s worked together to read and offer an activity based on the book they shared. Students were assigned one room for the two weeks and teachers moved to the different locations. This week, students will go to the library and vote for their favorite book. We send the results to the state and in early Spring we get the winning book selected by the children in the State of Vermont.
If you would like to get a list of the books, please contact Denise Wentz at the Allen Brook Library.
Lastly, Allen Brook had a PBIS celebration the day before the break. Teachers, paras and TA’s all offered different activities for the kids to sign up for. There was science, beads, origami, golf and much much more. Students were co-mingled for the activities for the last hour of the day. This is the second year that we have done these activities and every student had a wonderful time. The beehive is filling up and we look forward to the next PBIS celebration.

BASKET RAFFLE UPDATE
We have a busy few weeks ahead of us for The Big Basket Raffle & Silent Auction fundraiser, to be held on Saturday, April 14th, 2018. Next week, week of March 19th, families should receive more information from their students’ teachers on their Classroom Basket Theme. Here is a SNEAK PEEK LINK at all the Classroom Themes for this year. Look for the Sign Up link in the School Bell in the upcoming weeks to see how you might be able to help, as it takes the support of many to make this event continue to be our most successful fundraiser! Any questions, please contact Emily Downing Ponce emilydowningponce@gmail.com.
P.S. And one last request for empty baskets! Please drop them off in either the ABS or WCS school office! Thank you!
Jump Rope for Heart 2018
Williston Schools' annual Jump Rope for Heart will take place at Allen Brook School the morning of Friday, April 6th from 8:45-11:15 am.
Jump Rope for Heart is a fundraiser for the American Heart Association. Participating WCS students will be bused to ABS in the morning and brought back to WCS after the event is over.
Children in grades 1-4 can participate in the event. Signed permission slips should be handed in to a physical education teacher.
Registration deadline is Friday, March 30th or when we reach the maximum capacity of 375 students (whichever comes first). Fundraising envelopes will be given out after permission slips are handed in. Fundraising envelopes must be turned in by April 2nd. Look on the pledge envelopes for information about on-line fundraising opportunities. The online fundraising has worked very well for the students participating in the past. If you choose to do online fundraising please still turn in the envelope and enclose a print out of the online summary fundraising sheet. Classroom teachers with concerns about a student’s status for participation in the Jump Rope for Heart may hold the student from participating. Without a teacher signature the student will not be allowed to participate.

Summer School Parent Survey
Williston schools need your help to create better summer school programs. We would like to hear from you whether your child has attended any of our programs or not. Please complete this survey by April 20th: https://tinyurl.com/summerparentsurvey or paper copies are available in the front offices at Allen Brook or Williston Central School.
3rd/4th grade chorus rehearsals
The group rehearses every Wednesday after school in the WCS Band/Chorus room 3:00-4:00.
All 3rd/4th graders may come to the March 14th rehearsal to sing, watch, and just check it out with no obligation to join. However, starting with the March 21st rehearsal, only “official” chorus members may continue to attend. So… If your child “officially” wants to be a member of the 3rd/4th grade chorus, please send in the bottom portion of this paper on or before March 21st, and he/she should attend rehearsal each Wednesday afternoon.
I will be creating a list of “official members” on March 21st for attendance and dismissal plans. I will need to know which students have decided to join and where they will be going after chorus ends at 4:00. Please fill out the bottom portion of this paper completely and return it to me. For safety purposes, if your child will ever be going somewhere other than where you specify below, I need a written note or email from you on or before that day. Please fill out and return the bottom portion of this paper only if your child will be in the 3rd/4th grade chorus.
Please contact me with any questions or concerns.
