WEEKLY NEWSLETTER - AUGUST 8, 2016
Greetings to Our Fellow Mustang Families!
As FSA faculty and administrators, we truly enjoy every moment of this week as we welcome our students and families to a new school year.
We wish you a wonderful school year at Fulton Science Academy!
"Don’t be fooled by the calendar. There are only as many days in the year as you make use of. One man gets only a week’s value out of a year while another man gets a full year’s value out of a week." - Charles Richards
Because this is the first newsletter of the current school year, I wanted to take this opportunity to please strongly encourage our families (including our students) to read the FSA Weekly Newsletter. This communications piece is created to help you stay informed about the many wonderful things happening at FSA!
The picture below is from our first day of school as students arrived. It was wonderful to see so many smiling faces!

PRE-K THROUGH HIGH SCHOOL HOME VISIT PROGRAM
Experience and research from all over the United States shows that the interaction with a student’s family at their home is a very effective way to help their academic and behavioral progress.
We are very happy to have a faculty that is committed to not only providing your child with a top-quality education, but also learning about your child...not only in school, but also in his/her home environment.
Our home visit program is entirely voluntary, and has been met with rave reviews.
Parent Feedback to Home Visits...
“Early in the school year, a group of teachers took the time to come to our home to meet us and discuss the school program with us. That event brought us back to the time in which schooling was a true partnership between parent and teacher and reaffirmed in our minds that FSA truly cares about the development of our children.”
“We even had two teachers visit us at our home. They were a pleasure to meet and we could clearly see how much they enjoy teaching students.”
“Thank you very much for your visit and the chocolates yesterday. We enjoyed having you over very much. I also want to thank you for turning math from the most complicated and somewhat scary subject into one of our most favorites.”
“We all enjoyed your visit last night to our home. It was such a pleasure to informally get to know both of you. My son thought it was really cool that two teachers came to his house. He talked about it the whole way to school this morning in carpool. Personally, I admire the dedication you both have for your jobs. It makes a big difference in a student's attitude toward school. Your visit left no doubt in my mind that FSA was the right decision for my son.”
How Can You Schedule a Home Visit?
The process is actually very simple. Please send an e-mail to our home visit coordinator, Mrs. Unal, at junal@fultonscienceacademy.org. In that email, please provide three available dates for your child's home visit. We will get back to you and confirm a date. At least two teachers will be together for home visits; specific names/subjects will be dependent upon teacher available.
For any questions you have about this program, please send an e-mail to junal@fultonscienceacademy.org.
Please note: the best times to schedule a home visit are weekdays after 5:00 p.m., and anytime during the weekends, except Sunday mornings.

GREAT NEWS! INTRODUCING EARLY MORNING MUSIC AND CODING CLASSES
Dear FSA Families in 5th Grade through High School,
As part of our ongoing quest to make our school a leading STEAM institution in the region, we have been discussing ways to improve the music and computer/coding programs. We are pleased to report that as part of our school improvement plan for the 2016 - 2017 school year, we will now offer early morning music and coding classes. To best support this new initiative, we have added two additional faculty members to our school. These talented staff members include our new orchestra teacher, Dr. Hawk, and our new computer teacher.
Early morning classes are offered to students in grades five or higher (on an optional basis) and are held between 7:15 a.m. and 7:55 a.m. Thanks to these early morning classes, students will now have the option to take additional classes in the areas of either band/orchestra and/or coding classes before our regular school day begins. We are proud to offer these optional music and coding classes, as they should give an extra “boost” to our already extensive course curriculum.
Please note that while the music classes are open to any student in 5th grade or higher, the coding classes are only open to students in 6th grade through 8th grade.
Students may choose one day of music and two days of coding classes. These optional classes will begin on Tuesday, August 30, 2016.
REQUIREMENTS FOR THE CLASSES
- Students should be in the classroom no later than 7:15 a.m. Students will not be allowed to enter into classroom after 7:20 a.m. because it would be disruptive to the learning process.
- Please note that the teachers reserve the right to remove any student who misses more than three classes in any semester.
If your child is interested in registering for these optional music and/or coding classes, please CLICK HERE to register.
Please let me know if you have any questions.

MUSIC EDUCATION @ FULTON SCIENCE ACADEMY
We would like to update you about our growing music program. Thus far, 137 students out of 201 students in grades five through eight have completed their online instrument selection for music education.
If you are in 5th grade through 8th grade and have not yet selected your instrument, please do so using this link: https://docs.google.com/a/fultonscienceacademy.org/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSd1OFynvghXo_CfzTHhkBG4yCf-sWvbS-PDNtOkvb3UjI2yFg/viewform
Any student who made a selection that did not include Piano, Guitar, or General Music has been added under General Music. We have two students who fit these criteria thus far.
WHAT IS OUR PLAN IN MUSIC CLASS THIS YEAR?
- PRE-K THROUGH 4TH GRADE: These students will continue to receive general music education similar to last year.
- 5TH GRADE THROUGH 8TH GRADE: Last year, students in grades five through eight received general music education during their one-hour weekly music class. This year, these students will now have the option of receiving band, orchestra, or general music education in a small group setting. This change has been made possible because we can now offer two music classes. One will be taught by Dr. Hawk and the other by Mrs. Peacock. Since students will be divided into two classes, each class will have about 8 to 12 students. We believe this change will be very beneficial and will offer the children more individualized attention.
- HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS: High school students can also enjoy our music program by utilizing one of the opportunities shared later in this email.
HOW DOES THIS YEAR’S MUSIC PROGRAM WORK?
- During music class time, band students will go to Mrs. Peacock’s classroom for band education and orchestra students will go to Dr. Hawk’s classroom for orchestra education.
- We expect to have a few piano students in each class. Both band and orchestra classes will have a few pianos/keyboards for students who selected piano as their preferred instrument These students will be allowed to practice their skills during music class time using earphones, if they wish to do so. They may also choose to join the general music education activity.
- Each class will also have one or two students who selected guitar and/or general music education. These students will be taught general music education using an iPad application under the direction of our wonderful teachers.
WHAT ARE ADDITIONAL OPPORTUNITIES TO IMPROVE MUSIC EDUCATION?
We realize that one hour of music class during regular school hours will not be sufficient to show measurable progress. Therefore, we are pleased to offer additional opportunities for our students to enjoy music education. (Please note, the options listed below are made available in addition to the regularly-scheduled school time education.)

HOW IMPORTANT IS MUSIC EDUCATION?
Research consistently points to the many benefits of incorporating music education into a school’s curriculum. Examples include:
- Musical training helps develop language and reasoning: Students who have early musical training will develop the areas of the brain related to language and reasoning. The left side of the brain is better developed with music, and songs can help imprint information on young minds.
- A mastery of memorization: Even when performing with sheet music, student musicians are constantly using their memory to perform. The skill of memorization can serve students well in education and beyond.
- Students learn to improve their work: Learning music promotes craftsmanship, and students learn to want to create good work instead of mediocre work. This desire can be applied to all subjects of study.
- Increased coordination: Students who practice with musical instruments can improve their hand-eye coordination. Just like playing sports, children can develop motor skills when playing music.
- A sense of achievement: Learning to play pieces of music on a new instrument can be a challenging, but achievable goal. Students who master even the smallest goal in music will be able to feel proud of their achievement.
- Kids stay engaged in school: An enjoyable subject like music can keep kids interested and engaged in school. Student musicians are likely to stay in school to achieve in other subjects.
- Success in society: Music is the fabric of our society, and music can shape abilities and character. Students in band or orchestra are less likely to abuse substances over their lifetime. Musical education can greatly contribute to children’s intellectual development as well.
- Emotional development: Students of music can be more emotionally developed, with empathy towards other cultures They also tend to have higher self esteem and are better at coping with anxiety.
- Students learn pattern recognition: Children can develop their math and pattern-recognition skills with the help of musical education. Playing music offers repetition in a fun format.
- Better SAT scores: Students who have experience with music performance or appreciation score higher on the SAT. One report indicates 63 points higher on verbal and 44 points higher on math for students in music appreciation courses.
- Fine-tuned auditory skills: Musicians can better detect meaningful, information-bearing elements in sounds, like the emotional meaning in a baby’s cry. Students who practice music can have better auditory attention, and pick out predictable patterns from surrounding noise.
- Music builds imagination and intellectual curiosity: Introducing music in the early childhood years can help foster a positive attitude toward learning and curiosity. Artistic education develops the whole brain and develops a child’s imagination.
- Music can be relaxing: Students can fight stress by learning to play music. Soothing music is especially helpful in helping kids relax.
- Musical instruments can teach discipline: Kids who learn to play an instrument can learn a valuable lesson in discipline. They will have to set time aside to practice and rise to the challenge of learning with discipline to master playing their instrument.
- Preparation for the creative economy: Investing in creative education can prepare students for the 21st century workforce. The new economy has created more artistic careers, and these jobs may grow faster than others in the future.
- Development in creative thinking: Kids who study the arts can learn to think creatively. This kind of education can help them solve problems by thinking outside the box and realizing that there may be more than one right answer.
- Music can develop spatial intelligence: Students who study music can improve the development of spatial intelligence, which allows them to perceive the world accurately and form mental pictures. Spatial intelligence is helpful for advanced mathematics and more.
- Kids can learn teamwork: Many musical education programs require teamwork as part of a band or orchestra. In these groups, students will learn how to work together and build camaraderie.
- Responsible risk-taking: Performing a musical piece can bring fear and anxiety. Doing so teaches kids how to take risks and deal with fear, which will help them become successful and reach their potential.
- Better self-confidence: With encouragement from teachers and parents, students playing a musical instrument can build pride and confidence. Musical education is also likely to develop better communication for students.

GRANDPARENTS DAY
Alex Haley once wrote, "Nobody can do for little children what grandparents do. Grandparents sort of sprinkle stardust over the lives of little children."
At Fulton Science Academy, we cherish the special relationships between our students and their grandparents. As such, we embrace an opportunity to invite grandparents to please enjoy a special day at FSA, in the company of their beloved grandchildren.
SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 11
1 p.m. - Brief School Tour

- To help children become aware of the strength, information and guidance older people can offer.
We encourage students, parents, and grandparents to come together to celebrate!
If you wish to attend our special Grandparents Gathering, please send an e-mail to Mrs. Condon at rcondon@fultonscienceacademy.org by Thursday, September 8, 2016 and let us know how many will attend from your family so that we can plan accordingly.
