Davis Intermediate School News-October 5, 2018
No School Monday, October 8th-Fair Day
Grade 5 Adventure Camp Information and Packing List- October 10-12
Students attending camp:
- SACK LUNCH for Wednesday. (Do not pack this in the luggage.)
- Come to school at the regular time, 7:45-8:05, with their luggage and sleeping bags for camp. The luggage truck will be in front of the school. All luggage get placed on the truck when students arrive to school. (DO NOT PUT LUNCH IN THE LUGGAGE TRUCK)
- Report to the back gym until 8:15a.m.
- Report to Block A at 8:15a.m.
- Meet their camp chaperones around 9:30a.m. and will leave for camp around 10:30a.m.
- Return at approximately 1:45p.m. on Friday. Please make arrangements to pick them up from Davis at this time.
Students not attending camp:
- On Wednesday will report to the main gym at 8:15a.m. for P.E. On Thursday and Friday they will report to their Block A (adjusted schedule).
- Will have an adjusted/different schedule that will accommodate the 4 core classes, PE, Elective and Lunch Wednesday-Friday.
- Lunch will be from 11:33-12:03
Donations Needed for Grade 6 Science by October 19th.
- Packages of Standard White Paper Plates-the thin, plain paper ones, nothing fancy
- Rolls of Painters Tape
- Cardboard Rolls: such as paper towel rolls, toilet paper rolls, or wrapping paper rolls
Donations can be brought directly to science teachers. THANK YOU!
Neon Monster Bash - October 26th from 6:30-8:00p.m. (Davis students only)

IF we reach our PTA goal of 100% membership by October 30th, then ALL students may wear Halloween costumes to school on Halloween Day! (NO MASKS OR CLOWN COSTUMES)

Student-Led Conferences - Parents-We Need and Want You to Attend!
This is a very important and exciting event. We hope that ALL parents will make time to attend. Please see the schedule below for your child’s conference date and time. Our goal is for every student to lead a conference discussing goals they have set and their progress the first 9 weeks of school. Content area performance standards, data, areas of strength, areas in need of attention, work habits and goal setting will be discussed. If you are unable to attend, please send a grandparent, aunt/uncle, friend of the family, etc. Thank you in advance for taking time out to have a 20 minute conversation about your child’s education presented to you from your child’s perspective.
All conferences will take place from 8:30-8:50A.M.
Grade 5 Student-Led Conferences
October 29th: Brown, Yale, Cornell
October 30th: Columbia and Rice
Grade 6 Student-Led Conferences
November 1st: Dartmouth, Harvard, Penn
November 2nd: Princeton, Stanford
What Parents can expect at Student-Led Conferences:
· At a student-led conference, your child does most of the talking.
· Your child will tell you the Performance Standards he/she has been working on in class.
· Your child will discuss with you his/her progress in each class.
· Your child will discuss with you his/her improvement plan for the upcoming grading period.
· After your child has finished he/she will turn the meeting over to your for any future questions that need to be answered.
· Teachers will only act as facilitators for the large group.
Things to Do Before the Conference:
· Make arrangements to attend or send someone on your behalf.
· Let you child know that you are excited about this event and your plans to attend.
· Make a list of questions that you might ask your child about his/her course work and work habits (a list will also be provided).
· If you cannot make the schedule conference time, please call or email your child’s teacher(s) to reschedule. If you are not sure which “team” your child is on, please contact your child’s teacher.
On Conference Day:
· Arrive on time.
· Take notes during the conference.
· Encourage your child.
· Ask for clarification of things your do not understand.
After the Conference:
· If you still have questions and concerns, set up an appointment to meet with the teacher on another date.
· Fill out the Parent Evaluation of Student-Led Conferences Form.

News from PTA
Volunteer of the Month: Congratulations to Ana Priestley for being selected as Davis PTA’s Volunteer of the Month!! Ana is our Spirit Wear Coordinator and has done an incredible job of organizing the spirit wear closet, fulfilling spirit wear orders and volunteering for all things PTA. She spends every Thursday morning working the PTA table filling requests and answering questions.
Spirit Wear: Davis PTA will host a spirit wear table every Thursday morning from 7:30-8:00. Stop by and get our spirit wear shirts or pop sockets. We will also sell spirit wear all year at our events. If your child still needs something, please fill out the spirit wear forms located on the Davis website and send in to the office. We will fill orders as they come in. If we do not have a size, we will contact the parent.
WE HAVE SWEATSHIRTS!!! Please send in the attached form with your student to place an order for a sweatshirt! They may turn it in on Thursdays at the PTA table or may turn in to the office any day. Sweatshirts will only be on sale 10/4-10/19, so get your orders in!
PTA Membership: We have a goal of 100% membership this year. Please take a second and join if you have not yet. PTA is committed to bring more spirit and family events to Davis. We will also be hosting events for PTA Student Members only this year! Grandparent Membership Contest 9/24-10/15: We are hosting a Grandparent contest Sept 24th- Oct 15th. For every grandparent that joins Davis PTA under your student's name; your student will be entered into a raffle for a $25 gift card of their choice. It doesn't have to be their specific grandparent, they can borrow others for the contest. Grandparents may send in the attached form or join at www.joinpta.org (please denote grandparent and student's name)
Nothing Bundt Cake Fundraiser 10/8-10/12: Visit Nothing Bundt Cake in Murphy the week of Oct 8- Oct 12th and 30% of any food purchase will go to Davis PTA. Don’t forget teachers love Bundtlets too!
SAGE Spec Ed Parent Meet & Greet 10/15: Meet other Special Education parents from the district at Conversations Coffee House at 10:30 or 7:00
Reflections Family Night 10/18 at 6:00: Join us on 10/18 to start creating or work on your creation! We will have tables set up for drawing, coloring, literature, whatever your needs are. We will also have cookies to share!
Texas PTA Reflection entries now being accepted through Thursday, November 15th. Entry forms & contest rules for the “Heroes Around Me” themed contest can be found in the folders by the office or online at https://www.txpta.org/reflections-participation. · There are seven categories; Dance, Film, Literature, Music, Photography, Visual Arts & Special Artist. Neon Monster Bash 10/26 6:30-8:00: Join us for our first annual Neon Monster Bash! Drop off in the back by the cafeteria! Wear your Halloween costume (no masks or clown costumes) or something NEON and dance to great music from Jam On DF- Chase Neel. Take a break from dancing and enjoy a few treats- hot dogs, pizza and cookies. We will also have Neon Face Painting!
All Student PTA Members FREE ADMISSION!!! Not a PTA Member? – No worries – Join NOW or at the Bash for $9.00! The $9.00 also allows FREE admission into the Student Night Outs PTA will host throughout the year!
Box Tops Contest: Each month of the school year, PTA is hosting a box top contest! No need to tape or glue the box tops to a piece of paper, just cut them out, put in a bag and write your child's University on it. We will pick up box tops the last Friday of the month and announce the winner the following week! Winning Universities will receive fun awards all year!! WINNER WILL BE ANNOUNCED NEXT WEEK!!
Our next contest ends Oct 26th, so keep clipping and bagging!
Halloween Costumes on Halloween IF PTA reaches its 100% Membership Goal: YES, you read that correctly! Maker Monday every Week!
On each Maker Monday, students may sign up online to stay after school from 3:45-4:15 to explore and create in that month's STEAM Experience/Maker Project.
Makerspaces use the principles of STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math) to spark students learning and critical thinking skills. Activities can range from the artsy to the high-tech.
