Farms, Fact Families, and Frights!
This week was so full of excitement it’s hard to believe we were at the farm only last Monday! We kicked off the week with a beautiful and eye-opening field trip to Oxbow Farms. Kids explored the different parts of plants, and saw first-hand how their food grows. We were able to sample many different foods and flavors from different plant parts! We tried roots, leaves, flowers, seeds, and stems! Each group had a different experience, so be sure to ask your child what they ate at the farm! Did they try the fresh Brussel sprouts or the multicolored carrots?
In Math this week, we continued our work with dominoes. Kids stepped back from their games to analyze the strategies they’ve been using to count the dots. We discussed the advantages and disadvantages of many different addition strategies, and kids were challenged to find the most efficient strategy for different situations. Towards the end of the week, we introduced Fact Families, and students made their own fact family flip book. Try asking your kiddo what a fact family is! We also finished our October Number Corner, and have just started November. In November, kids will have a dual focus during number corner of reading and interpreting clocks, and identify and understanding fractions in different contexts.
In Reading and Writing this week, we continued our work in reading groups! Each group is making so much exciting progress. During Writing we worked with our partners and learned how to share our work productively.
During Social Studies, we transitioned our paper settings to our final season, autumn. Kids learned how the seasonal changes affected the lifestyles of the Wampanoag people. They explored the differences in finding food, preparing for the winter, and moving homes to a warmer setting. It was so impressive to hear their knowledge accumulate during the final stages of this unit!
Beyond the academics this week, we had so much fun preparing for and celebrating Halloween! The kids handled the excitement with joy and maturity. They had a blast checking out different stations at our Halloween Carnival. They took adorable Polaroid pictures, and collected heaps of candy! Then, we had two wonderful class parties! Thank you all for coming and volunteering your time and resources to make our parties special for the kiddos.
Have a great weekend!
